A group of about 50 persons gathered in the St. John Lutheran Parish Hall Monday evening, August 13, to hear Keith Hooper tell of the Humanitarian Efforts to Lesson Poverty of Underprivileged Children in the Philippines (H.E.L.P.) Foundation he has founded in the Philippines. Barbara Grauerholz introduced the speaker and the program was hosted by the K-Town Kates.

Keith told of how he had served in the Peace Corps in the Philippines after his graduation from Kansas State, loved  the people and country and met and fell in love with his wife, and then returned to the United States, but he could never forget the plight of the underprivileged children. Several years ago he made a personal commitment to spend his retirement years combating poverty in the Philippines. He realized he couldn't do it alone so spends much travel and personal time raising funds for this project. The projects include an orphanage program, child nutrition/feeding program, livelihood, literacy, and rainwater harvesting.

As the pictures of the destitute children were shown and Keith told of the need, the audience listened intently and there were tears in many eyes. Keith and his wife will soon be returning to the Philippines to continue their work. It was a most interesting and enlightening evening for those attending. Refreshments were served during the social hour.

The K-town Kates had a short business meeting after the program. When the minutes and treasurer's reports had been approved, it was moved to give a donation to the H.E.L.P. Foundation. Programs for next month's meeting were discussed and information will be placed in this column. It was moved to continue to put the K-town Kates' meetings on the Kensington website. Food pantry hosts for the next month were briefly discussed.

Natalie's wedding to Chuck Knipp is planned for Saturday, September 1, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington.

The guests were given a quiz about the bride and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be entertained the group by answering questions about how well she knew the prospective groom. After Natalie had opened her gifts, a strawberry dessert was served.

Those in attendance were Grace Hainke, mother of the bride; Cindi Knipp, mother of the prospective groom, and Mildred Grauerholz, Patricia Hainke, and Bessie Bierman, grandmothers of the bride, Pat Ficken, grandmother of the groom, and Lacey Keller, sister of the groom
