Kensington High School before moving to
Jewell where he has been teaching. He is a
graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg.

the welfare of the students and wanting the
best possible education for each one of
them. She states she loves photography and
reading and keeps very busy on the farm and
with her family.

A group of about 50
persons gathered in the St. John Lutheran
Parish Hall Monday evening, August 13, to
hear Keith Hooper tell of the Humanitarian
Efforts to Lesson Poverty of Underprivileged
Children in the Philippines (H.E.L.P.)
Foundation he has founded in the
Philippines. Barbara Grauerholz introduced
the speaker and the program was hosted by
the K-Town Kates.
Keith told of how he had served in the Peace
Corps in the Philippines after his
graduation from Kansas State, loved the
people and country and met and fell in love
with his wife, and then returned to the
United States, but he could never forget the
plight of the underprivileged children.
Several years ago he made a personal
commitment to spend his retirement years
combating poverty in the Philippines. He
realized he couldn't do it alone so spends
much travel and personal time raising funds
for this project. The projects include an
orphanage program, child nutrition/feeding
program, livelihood, literacy, and rainwater
harvesting.
As the pictures of the destitute children
were shown and Keith told of the need, the
audience listened intently and there were
tears in many eyes. Keith and his wife will
soon be returning to the Philippines to
continue their work. It was a most
interesting and enlightening evening for
those attending. Refreshments were served
during the social hour.
The K-town Kates had a short business
meeting after the program. When the minutes
and treasurer's reports had been approved,
it was moved to give a donation to the
H.E.L.P. Foundation. Programs for next
month's meeting were discussed and
information will be placed in this column.
It was moved to continue to put the K-town Kates'
meetings on the Kensington website. Food
pantry hosts for the next month were briefly
discussed.

Lutheran Church in Kensington.
The guests were given a quiz about the bride
and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be
entertained the group by answering questions
about how well she knew the prospective
groom. After Natalie had opened her gifts, a
strawberry dessert was served.
Those in attendance were Grace Hainke,
mother of the bride; Cindi Knipp, mother of
the prospective groom, and Mildred
Grauerholz, Patricia Hainke, and Bessie

Michael Youngquist fell from the roof of a
house he was helping shingle in Smith Center
last Monday and was air-lifted to Wichita.
Both wrists were broken and pinned and casts
were put on along with a brace for his neck
injuries. He came home Thursday and
is learning to deal with his handicaps.
Michael is the son of Kevin Youngquist.
Buddy Hoft had surgery at the Good Samaritan
Hospital in Kearney, Neb., Thursday. His
wife Phonsene and daughter, Janis Mogan, hae
been staying with him.
Jeremy Hunter was admitted to the Good
Samaritan Hospital in Kearney late Saturday
night for observation and treatment after a
car accident.
Luetta Beckman is in the Smith County
Hospital for observation and tests.
Sympathy is extended to George and Sandy
Powell and family on the death of George's
brother, Ira Powell, age 79, of Salina on
Monday, August 13, 2007. He was the
warehouse foreman for Salina Supply Company
for many years. He leaves a wife, Phyllis, a
son and five daughters. The memorial service
was held Thursday at the Ryan Mortuary in
Salina.
Dustin Smith was a Wednesday evening supper
guest of his grandparents, Arthur and Betty
Smith of Athol. He is a new licensed
pharmacist at Walgreen's in Hays and a
recent graduate from Kansas University in
Lawrence.
Dail Smith of Clay Center was a
recent overnight guest of the
Smiths. Joining them for supper to help
Arthur celebrate his birthday were Stanley
and Kim Smith, Bennie Smith, and Ilene and
Millard Voorhees, all of Smith Center.
Ruth Wolf's recent weekend guests were her
daughters, Bev Mills of Bonner Springs, Pat
Mancuso and Travis of Lee Summit, Mo, and
Janeen Landoll of Marysville.
The weather has been hot and humid, and a
soaking shower of rain would be welcome. The
native grass lawns are losing their green
lushness and turning brown. Perhaps
the tropical storms and hurricanes will
bring moisture later in the week.
Kensington city received 1.20 inch of much
appreciated rain Monday afternoon in a
surprise thunderstorm.
