My regrets for publishing the e-mail message about addressing and sending cards to "A Recovering American Soldier" at Walter Reed Army Medical Center last week. I wish to inform you that it was a hoax, and these cards will be discarded. All mail sent to anyone in the military must be sent to an individual's address or they will be discarded. This is for security reasons which I can readily understand. I was enthusiastic about this idea to bring joy to a service person, but I should have checked it out more closely.

I did receive a memo from Melanie Elliott of Operation SOS that it is possible to sent holiday cards addressed to: We Support You During Your Recovery, c/o American Red Cross, P.O. Box 419, Savage, MD 20763-0419. The American Red Cross will collect, review and disseminate holiday greeting cards to wounded military personnel. Red Cross volunteers will receive and bundle the cards to be shipped by Pitney Bowes Government Solutions. Then, Red Cross volunteers at military medical facilities will distribute the cards to patients and their families in time for the holidays. Only cards will be accepted, not packages.

Be sure to affix adequate postage and cards must be received no later than Dec. 27. Cards and notes only--and please refrain from using glitter or any other inserts that would not be appropriate in a hospital environment.

Gary Nonamaker states that new-born calves are coming in two's again this year. He reports seven sets of twins already with half of his herd still to go. He saved all but one of them. As readers will remember, he has had as many as six sets in one season, but this tops former amounts. The twins are not from the same mothers as last year. They are not identical nor of the same sex. It keeps them busy with some requiring bottle feeding. He says veterinarians have no explanation so if farmers care to speculate, Gary would enjoy hearing from them, but in the meantime, the Nonamaker's herd keeps growing.
