Your correspondent needs your help with early deadlines for the next two weeks. The papers need the items on Thursday the next two weeks for publication during the holidays. Please, folks, if you have holiday guests, report your company immediately after the event so they can be included and  there will be something to read in the next two issues about Kensington happenings. Last week is a reminder what winter can be like, but yet this area has been fortunate compared to other areas of the Kansas. Rain began falling late last Monday afternoon and the weather predictions of a severe ice storm became a reality by Tuesday morning when everything was covered with a thick covering of ice. The electricity was off in Kensington city for about 4 to 5 hours early Tuesday morning, but rural areas were much harder hit and some were off most of the week. Schools were closed Tuesday and Wednesday and started late on Thursday with bus drivers taking the routes cautiously. The sun came out Thursday and temperatures rose above freezing to give a brief reprieve to get chores caught up and groceries and necessities purchased before the next forecasted snow storm was to arrive Friday.

The white stuff began falling mid-afternoon Friday leaving an estimated six inches of snow by Saturday morning. The wind in the open areas did move it some and amounts are difficult to measure. The bright sunshine brought out tractors with blades, snow blowers, and snow shovelers Saturday morning as they began getting streets and sidewalks passable again. The sunshine is most welcome and the good news is that the coming week is to have temperatures in the 40's with no forecasted moisture. Farmers will be busy getting lots cleared to make life more bearable for the livestock.

This area won't need to be "dreaming of a white Christmas" as there probably will still be snow around for the holiday, but everyone hopes the weather will be favorable and the roads clear for all the people that wish to travel, although snow is a possibility again by the weekend.

Thanks to all those that have helped to make the weather more bearable especially to those who cleared snow from driveways and parking lots, shoveled the snow from sidewalks, lent a hand to walkers over the slick spots, brought the mail for neighbors, and just being there when needed. We do live in a wonderful community.

Taylor Grauerholz got to go home with his parents, Brandon and Kara Grauerholz,  to their home in Kearney, Neb., last Friday. Tyler and Brady, are in the neo-natal nursery at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, too. This is a day the family has been waiting for as the triplets have been in the hospital in Omaha since their birth on Sept. 12 about three weeks prematurely. All of them weigh over five pounds now. It is hoped that Tyler and Brady will soon learn how to eat better so that they, too, can be released in several weeks to go home. At least, the family will be able to enjoy Christmas closer to home with their family and friends. The family is very appreciative of your prayers for them during this difficult time.

A surprise graduation reception was held to honor Natalie (Hainke) Knipp on Dec, 16 in Victoria. Natalie graduated in December in the Veterinary Technology program from Colby Community College. He and his wife Carrol are now living in Lincoln, Neb., to be closer to their children.

Matt and Ashley Hohner and son recently moved to Glen Elder. Matt is working for Sunflower Manufacturing in Cawker City.

The Barn Christmas was held Saturday evening in the sanctuary of First St. John Lutheran Church because of the ice and snow making it impossible to get the barn ready or to transport the worshippers to the site.

The all-school Christmas program was postponed until this (Monday) evening. The sun is shining brightly and there is some thawing going on, but places are still very slick.
