Time Marches On

Your correspondent, Ruth Bienhoff, recently discovered while re-reading some past Christmas letters that it was in the fall of 1973 that she began writing the Kensington news column for the Smith County Pioneer. She did substitute writing until Lottie Bronson was no longer able to write the column and has been collecting and writing the happenings in Kensington for almost 35 years. Soon Huck Boyd of the Phillipsburg Review also contacted her and the column appeared in that weekly publication also. She later began sending the column to The Advocate of Phillips County.

The writing progressed from a manual Royal typewriter to an electric typewriter with the use of carbon paper for the duplicate copy. Local folks who worked near the offices in Smith Center and Phillipsburg graciously took the notes with them on Tuesday morning as they were going to their jobs. About ten years ago she acquired her first computer, and she has been able to send the notes by e-mail. They do not have to be re-typed. This change is most appreciated by her as well as the newspaper staff.
