Christmas Senior Party at St. John Sunday

The very cold, blustery afternoon with snow flurries kept the attendance smaller than usual at the annual Christmas Senior party at St. John Lutheran Parish Hall Sunday afternoon. Robin Billings assisted by Nolan and Kendra Billings and Morgan and Macee Westbrook entertained with special Christmas songs, and Robin led the group singing of carols with Carol Rahjes as accompanist.

A variety of Christmas breads were served with coffee while the guests were seated at festively decorated tables with accents of the decorated tree and a number of poinsettia plants displayed around the room. The program concluded with a communion service with Pastor Patsy Koeneke in charge assisted by Eulonda Hagman. The afternoon of warm fellowship was greatly appreciated by those attending.
Tribute to Ted Levin

Ted Levin was a quiet man, but he was very predicatable. Each day, sometimes several times a day, he would get in his Chevy diesel pickup and drive slowly (about 15 m.p.h.) around town to check on his five rental houses, go to the Country Corner for coffee.or get his mail. So it was that his pickup driven by his oldest nephew, Alan Levin, was chosen to lead the funeral procession from First St. John Lutheran Church to the Germantown Cemetery. The end gate was put down just like it was when he would make his daily treks, but missing were a few boards, paint cans, step ladder, etc., that usually were protruding from the back of the box.

Next in line was Ted's cherished restored 1958 Bel Air Chevy car which he purchased new driven by his nephew Jeff Levin. If there were a parade within a 100 mile radius, the blue cover would come off this prided vehicle, he would polish and then enter it so he could win and add to his collection of trophies. He often told that he courted his beloved wife, Ruth, in this car. They were married in 1962. She preceded him in death in 2000 which left a big void in his life.

He worked his way through Kansas State College and graduated in 1942. He then enlisted in the Air Force and as a B-24 pilot flew bombing missions from northern Africa and Italy over German targets. An interesting VCR of his flights is in the Kensington Communit/School Library and available for check-out. Many ponds and terraces in this community were built by Levin Construction Company with Ted running the earth-moving equipment before his retirement.

Around the Community

John Saddler's shoulder surgery was postponed last week and is scheduled for this week.

Justin and Tonya Lee and Camden of Denver, Colo., and Steve and Risa Bayliff, Trevor and Emily of Lakin spent the weekend with Leland and Linda Rahjes for their early family Christmas celebration.

A good deed by a group of Thunder Ridge High School students is noteworthy. Friday evening when Justin Abbott was called by his grandfather, Myron Abbott, to come and help him when his cattle got out, not only did Justin come to assist but he brought a group of high school friends who made quick work or rounding up the cattle and then hurrying back in time for their basketball practice. Yes, we have some terrific kids in our midst which should be appreciated.

Alice Rietzke was honored with a surprise party for her 80th birthday at First St. John Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon hosted by her family. A large group of relatives and friends enjoyed wishing her a happy birthday. visiting, viewing a power point presentation of her life, and enjoying refreshments.

If you don't like the weather in Kansas, wait 24 hours and your can have a drastic change. Saturday was beautiful with temps near 60 degrees, but the weather firecasters had warned that a drastic change was coming, and it did. Sunday got colder and the wind got fiercer as the day progressed with light snow flurries. By Monday morning, the readings were below zero, but the wind had died down and the sun shown during the day, making it seem better. However, it reminds us that it is December and to be prepared.
