The
annual meeting of the Kensington
Community Store, Inc., will be Thursday,
April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kensington
Senior Center. A report of the business
of the corporation up to March 31, 2008,
and the election of two members of the
Board of Directors for a three year
term are on the agenda. Mike Isom and
Jeff Nech are eligible for relection.
Write-in candidates will be accepted.

Saturday was an exciting day at the
Kensington Community/School Library when
the bantam eggs in the small incubator
began to hatch. Before the weekend was
over, nine tiny brown chicks had hatched
and more were emerging. Eggs were
provided by Benton Hrabe, Larry
Westerman, and Mrs. Wagner. Duck eggs
will also be hatching in about another
week. Needless to say that students,
pre-schoolers, and story hour attendees
are extremely excited.
Many
local folks appreciated having the
opportunity to hear Gracia Burnham speak
at the Huck Boyd Center in Phillipsburg
Sunday afternoon. She and her husband,
Martin. were held hostage in the
Philippines for thirteen months before
she was rescued and her husband was
killed in the fight. The Library
has both of her books, "In the Presence
of My Enemies" and "To Fly Again", for
check-out and your reading
pleasure. They are both interesting and
informative reading.
The biennial Athol Alumni and Homecoming
will not be held this year. Make your
plans now to attend next year on Sunday
evening, May 26, 2009.
The Kensington Food Pantry will be open

Powder in Franklin, Neb., last Saturday
evening. They report excellent food and
a good time.

The KU Honors
Banquet was held Thursday, April 10, 2008,
in Logan. Mr. Todd Bowman, Principal,
introduced Kensington's two honor scholars,
Erin Ferguson and Lindsey Grauerholz. The
seniors, along with their parents, were
honored with an evening meal, certificate of
achievement, and a special edition of "The
American Heritage Dictionary" designating
them as Kansas Honors Scholars. Parents of
the students are George and Deb Ferguson and
Darren and Nikki Grauerholz.
The 2008
National Honor Society induction ceremony
will be Wednesday, April 30, 2008. This
ceremony will take place in the gymnasium at
3 p.m. with a reception for the NHS members
and parents following the ceremony.
Matt Sidman
and Brian Mogan were in an accident when
the Cenco service truck (Ryan Rietzke's
company) they were in and a semi-truck
collided near Oshkosh, Neb., last
Tuesday morning. Matt had fractures of both
legs and a hand and was taken to the
Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff,
Neb., where surgery was performed. Brian
escaped serious injury with cuts and bruises
and was treated and released. He is
recuperating at home in Kensington.
Matt's mother,
Betty Sidman, and his grandmother, Ann
Ferguson, were in Scottsbluff over the
weekend. It is hoped that Matt can be
transferred to the trauma unit at Good
Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb, in the
near future to make it more convenient for
the family to visit. Check with his mother,
Betty, before sending cards to Matt.
Spencer and
Amanda Levin of Colorado Springs, Colo.,
announce the birth of a daughter, McKenna
Marie, on Wednesday, April 9, 2008. McKenna
weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz., and was 20 inches
long. She has a brother, Mason Arnold, and a
sister, Kaylee Katharine.
Grandparents
are Monte and Kathie Davidson of Wamego and
Steve and Deb Levin of Kensington. Great
grandparents are Rex and Bobbie Davidson of
Elk City, Lorrel and Virginia Almquist of
Smith Center, and Evelyn Levin of
Kensington.
Steve Levin
and Evelyn Levin went to Colorado Springs on
Saturday to visit the family. They were
accompanied home by Grandma Deb who had been
with the family assisting with their care.
Opal Irene
Hansen was born October, 12, 1926, the
youngest of eleven children born to Frank B.
and Clara (McGinnis) Vibber. Opal grew up in
Kensington and received her education in
schools there, except two yearw when she
attended the Athol Grade School. She
graduated from Kensington High School in
1944.
Opal worked in
various jobs when she was young. While
working in Phillipsburg, she met Martin
Hansen whom she later married. To this union
were born three children. Martin was a feed
salesman and they lived in several
communities and eventually made their home
in Hastings, Neb. In Hastings she was
employed in the laundry of Good Samaritan
Village. Opal died in Perkins Pavilion at
Good Samaritan Thursday, April 3, 2008, at
the age of 81 years.
Survivors are
her children, Peggy Lynn Stevens of Aurora,
Colo., James Lewis Hansen of Hastings, Neb.,
and Kathryn Christine and her husband Allan
Hanson of Borger, Tex.; and two sisters,
Ethel Hilbrink and Thelma Mahlman, both of
Smith Center, Kans.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Martin,
of 57 years; her parents, Frank and Clara
Vibber; three brothers, Harry, Frank and
Ralph Vibber; and five sisters, May Cornell,
Hazel Bronson, Tressie Gruber, Lola Arment,
and Irma Scharnhorst.
Services
were held Monday, April 7, 2008, at the
Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings, Neb.,
with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The Bell
Bunch met at Duffey's in Smith Center on
April 9 at 11:29 a.m. Present were
Agatha Ray, Eleanor Hesterman, Helen
Watts, and Jake and Donna Kelling of
Smith Center, Nadine Louise McCormick of
Kensington, and Pat Frank, a guest. They
enjoyed putting names on pictures, some
as old as 1992 when the first
get-together was held at Nadine Louise's
home. The next get-together will be
Wednesday, June 11.
Luetta Beckman
entered the Smith County Hospital Sunday for
observation and treatment.
Mary Ann
Dreiling spent several days in the hospital
at Smith Center last week for breathing
problems.
Two-year-old
Jayme Baumann's mother, Donna Brown, 28, of
Colby and the her newborn baby died in
childbirth last week. Jayme lives with her
father, Brandon Baumann, and is a
granddaughter of Errol and Marla Baumann,
all of Kensington.
Denis and Wilma Sweat spent some time in
Lenexa staying with Brenda and Joe Rongish's
kids while they were both gone on business
trips. The Sweats left on Friday, April 4,
and stayed until Tuesday, April 8, when
Joe’s mother came to take over. Denis and
Wilma then went to Emporia for the
Confirmation of their granddaughter, Melissa
Coats, that evening. She is the oldest
daughter of Sharon and Glen Coats and was
confirmed with a group of about 65. Denis
and Wilma spent the night with the Coats'
and drove home the next day.
Denis and Wilma also got to visit with
Stephen and Sarah Sweat and their kids on
Sunday evening. Maria and Quentin Stoll had
visited his folks in Yates Center over the
weekend and were on their way back to
Ankeny, Iowa. They, too, stopped in Kansas
City to visit for a while. The weather was
very nice that evening and Stephen and Sarah
served an outside picnic lunch which the
kids all enjoyed.
Jim and Jean Carstens-Vosberg of Loveland,
Colo., were houseguests at Maria Seemann's
home last week.
A son, Brayden Warren, was born to Derek and
Janeen Sturtevant of Lincoln, Neb., on April
20, 2008. Brayden weighed 7 lbs. 5 oz.
Grandparents are Dennis and Glenda
Sturtevant of Milford, Neb. The late
Margaret and LeRoy Gemaehlich would have
been his great-grandparents.
Nadine Hayden of Andover visited her mother,
Clara Beckmann at Prairie Haven over the
weekend
The Kensington area received about 1.50 inch
of moisture last week in several showers. It
has been windy and chilly with frost each
night threatening tender plants. The
forecast if for warmer weather with
southerly winds this week which should
hasten the greening of grass and trees.
Many improvements at
Prairie Haven
The manager and staff of Prairie Haven
extend a welcome to everyone to come see the
rennovations at Prairie Haven. A new shower
room has been added and the business office
and therapy room have been redecorated. A
new NuStep machine was donated to the
fitness room which the residents are able to
use.
Louie Bienhoff is a new resident arriving
last Friday. He and the other residents
always enjoy visitors.
Vernon and Doris Kuhlmann had a lot of
visitors last week to help them celebrate
their 60th wedding anniversary.
Congratulations, Vernon and Doris.
Dorine Kuhlmann spent a lot of time at the
Kensington gym at the 3-on-3 Chet Kuhlmann
Memorial Tournament with her family over the
weekend. Chet was Dorine's grandson.
The beauty shop was open Monday and
manicures were given. Music was enjoyed in
the afternoon. Bingo was played Tuesday
afternoon. What year was the afternoon quiz
and the Big Band Era were Wednesday
afternoon discussions. The United Church had
the Thursday morning Bible study followed by
fellowship time. The states of Virginia and
Vernont stats were given during the
afternoon and some humor was shared.
The local news was read Friday morning. The
April birthday party was held in the
afternoon. Residents with birthdays were
Velma Black (4-7), Mary Jones (4-14), and
Norva J. Wyrill (4-27). The residents always
enjoy game shows and the Lawrence Welk Show
on television in the evenings.
The United
Church had the Sunday morning Bible class
and afternoon worship service.
Residents had lots of visitors the past
