Many families are planning garage sales in
Kensington Saturday, May 3, and it will be
an opportunity for shoppers to pick up many
bargains. A bake sale will be held at the
Senior Center and coffee and rolls will be
served. Maps will be available at the
Country Corner and Senior Center.
Darren Wiens of Kearney, Neb., a KHS
graduate in 1996, will be the guest speaker
at the Jr/Sr High School Achievement Banquet
at the Legion Hall Thursday, May 1, at 6:30
p.m. Parents have been assigned dishes to
bring to compliment the meal. Packets with
awards and certificates will be handed out
to each student at the conclusion of the
program.
Kindergarteners thru Sixth Graders are
anxious to present their spring program, "In
Praise of Music", in the gym Monday, May 5,
at 7 p.m. Music director, Kristi Reneberg,
will be assisted by the teachers in the
program. The fourth grade recorders
and fifth and sixth grade bands will also
perform. Everyone is invited to come and
enjoy the talents of our elementary
students.
Friday, May 2, will be an exciting day for
prospective Kindergarteners. They will be
meeting their teacher, visiting the
classroom and learning what next fall will
be like for them. Anyone that did not
receive a letter and is planning to have
their child attend Kindergarten at Thunder
Ridge Schools next fall or for more

The annual Spring Tea will be held at St.
John Lutheran Parish Hall Sunday afternoon,
May 4, at 2 p.m. Linda Diercks, chairman,
is planning an interesting "Tea Time"
program with Martha Monstellar
of Washington, KS, as the guest speaker.
Refreshments will be served. All moms,
daughters, and friends in the community are
invited to enjoy the afternoon.
The K-town Kates will go to the Pizza Hut in
Phillipsburg for a Dutch supper and their
meeting Tuesday, May 13. Meet at Ruth
Levin's home at 6 p.m. to carpool.
Invitations have
been mailed to Kensington High School
Alumni for the banquet on Saturday, May 28
at the Kensington Legion Hall. The Class of
1988 will be the hosts. Chairperson Gina (Arment)
Taylor of Kansas City was in Kensington over
the weekend compiling information for what
will be the last gathering in the high
school as Goldbugs with the colors of black
and gold adorning the hallways. Next
year will be the consolidation of Kensington
and Eastern Heights as the Thunder Ridge
Schools with the colors of silver and royal

Erin Ferguson, KHS Senior, has been selected
for the Kansas Governor's Scholars Program.
Erin will be honored for her academic
achievement on Sunday, May 4, in Topeka. The
event will be held at Washburn University
with a lunch followed by the presentation of
the honored students. Erin is the daughter
of George and Deb Ferguson.
The annual meeting of the Kensington
Community Store was held April 24 at the
Kensington Senior Center. Mike Isom and Jeff
Nech were re-elected to the Board of
Directors for another term. Names were drawn
for the door prizes by Kennsly Blank. A $25
gift certificate to the Store was presented
to Betty Wagner, a $15 certificate to Mary
Beach, and a $10 certificate to Eulonda
Hagman.
"After Dark" was the theme chosen for the
annual Mother/Kay Banquet held Monday, April
21, in the KHS gym. The group were able to
enjoy the decorations from the Jr'Sr banquet
on the previous Saturday.
Lindsay Grauerholz gave the welcome and
Ashley Bertholf gave the prayer before the
banquet meal of lemon peppered chicken,
mashed potatoes, Brookville corn, tossed
salad, dinner roll, and cherry cheesecake,
catered by the Kensington Community Store,
was served.
Alia Rice introduced the speaker, Sheila
Dues. Mrs. Wagner, Kay sponsor, announced
the participants in the Fashion Show. Senior
Recognitions were given by Mrs. Wagner and a
Kay Powerpoint presentation was shown. The
Kay/Secret Mother's gift exchange was held
before Melissa Nonamaker gave the closing.
Twelve youth enjoyed pizza and desserts at
the St. John Luheran Parish Hall Sunday
evening. Sponsors, Debra Ferguson, Linda
Dettmer, and Grace Hainke presented a
humorous skit, "The Sower and the Seeds."
Games were played the remainder of the
evening.
Youth in attendance were Ryanne Rahjes,
Jackie and Madeline Reneberg, Nathan Larson,
Larissa Dettmer, Matraca Forell, Michaela
Bienhoff, Shelby Gordon, Justin Abbott,
Brittany Kirchhoff and Erin and Trent
Ferguson. Also present were Pastor Patsy
Koeneke, Brian Dettmer, and Gary Hainke.
St. John Lutheran Church plans another late
summer/early fall event for the youth in the
community.
Khil Lamont and Mindy Horner were married
Saturday evening, April 26 at First St. John
Lutheran Church in Kensington. The reception
followed at the Agra Legion Hall. Both are
employed in Phillipsburg and will reside in
rural Phillips County. Parents of the couple
are Steve and Deb Lamont of Kensington and
Tony and Patty Horner of Glade.
Patty Kuhlmann, who commutes to the Hays
Regional Medical Center, was honored at
special ceremonies on April 10 as the Nurse
of the Year. She was nominated by the
Cardiac Care Unit where she works and then
was selected as the overall winner for the
hospital. Her name will be placed on a
plaque in the hospital hall.
Family members attending the banquet and
program were Patty, her husband, Max, her
children, Taylor and Leah, and Julie
Kuhlmann and Mike and Dianna Rice.
Lucille M. Cromwell, 83, WaKeeny, died
Tuesday, April 22, 2008. She was born in
Smith County and graduated from Kensington
High School in 1942. She and her husband,
William, now deceased, lived in Kensington
for a number of years when he worked at the
Kensington Co-op.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne, James
A. and Nolan; five daughters, Sharon Marsh,
Mary Vogts, Korene Triplett, Darlene
Tillitson, and Vae Nilhas; a brother, A. E.
Smith; two sisters, Evelyn Smith and Carolyn
Underwood; 22 grandchildren; and 23
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday morning
at First United Methodist Church, WaKeeney.
A graveside service was st Germantown
Cemetery north of Kensington in the
afternoon.
Jeri Norden had recent orthoscopic knee
surgery which makes it necessary for her to
take time off from her busy schedule at
Country Corner and planting her large
garden.
Orville Borgmann of rural Athol had lung
cancer surgery on April 9 at the Good
Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb., and has
been in swingbed at the Smith County
Hospital. He hopes to return home today
(Monday).
Ted Levin is home. After spending weeks in
the hospitals at Kearney and Smith Center
and then at Prairie Haven following a severe
bout of the flu and pneumonia. He is
thrilled to be home since Thursday.
Matt Sidmann who suffered fractures in both
legs and his hand in a recent traffic
accident will continue as a patient at the
hospital in Scottsbluff, Neb. Cards may be

Luetta Beckman fell at the home of her
daughter in Omaha Sunday and dislocated her
hip.
Don and Jan Hoverson enjoyed having Don's
sisters spend the weekend with them. They
are Sandra Black of Garden City and Donna
and Ted Loyd of Overland Park. Lori Hoverson
of Hays joined them on Sunday, and Russell
and Carol Rose of Agra were afternoon
callers.. It was a special weekend as Don
and Jan both celebrated birthdays, and it
was also their 50th wedding anniversary.
They enjoyed the special time of being
together and visiting. Their children all
called to express their special greetings.
Clinton Rahjes and friend, Shannon Stamper,
of Vero Beach, Fla., and Dr. Ben and Angie
Dolezal and Lauren of Lindsborg were weekend
guests of Ron and Cindy Rahjes.
Suzanne (Wangerin) Faulkner of Ulysses moved
into the house at 207 N. Main Sunday which
she purchased from Bill and Jane Struckhoff.

Warren and Carrol Barnell of Lincoln, Neb.,
were visiting friends in the Kensington area
one day last week. They also stopped at
Prairie Haven, the Schools, and Senior
Center for renewing acquaintances.
Melba Hagman and Tamra and Darah Portenier
attended the National Tour of "Cats" at the
First Tier Event Center in Kearney, Neb.,
last Tuesday night. The Broadway play is
based on the poems of T.S. Eliot. Most of
the poems comprising Old Possum's Book of
Practical Cats were set to music, complete
and in the original published form. Music is
by Andrew Lloyd Webber. "Chicago" will be
coming to Kearney on Oct. 26, 2008.
Elton and Dot Haarberg of Colorado Springs
were stop-by company of Ruth Bienhoff
last Wednesday. They had lunch together at
the Kensington Community Store before they
went on to visit their son in Virginia.
Preschoolers Trenton and Taylor Streeter of
Topeka have been spending time with their
grandparents, Leland and Linda Rahjes.
Kensington city received about .80 rain in
several showers last week. Small hail
covered the ground in the thunderstorm that
occured Thursday evening. Temps have
remained cool, but a warm-up is due by the
middle of the week.
Hair stylings and manicures were given
Monday morning. The Kensington Music Club
entertained with familiar selections Monday
afternoon. Fun and fitness exercises and
one-one sessions are held daily. Bingo was
played Tuesday afternoon. The residents had
fun telling of Old-Time Remedies Wednesday
afternoon. The United Church had the
Thursday morning Bible study. Coffee with
cookies and visiting followed. Trivia was
discussed in the afternoon.
The local news was read Friday morning and
bingo was played in the afternoon. A movie
was shown Saturday and the residents enjoyed
watching the Lawrence Welk Show. Card games
and putting puzzles together are other
enjoyable past times in the evenings.
The Hearland Worship Center with Pastor
Darrell and Jeri Schmid and Georgetta Kinyon
as pianist had the Sunday afternoon worship
service for the residents.
Ted Levin returned to his home Thursday
afternoon. We wish him well, but he will be
missed.
