The weather for
Kensington's Old Fashioned Saturday Night is just what the Commerical
Club had ordered with cool temps and a gentle breeze to keep the flies
and mosquitos away, and they were rewarded for their planning with the
huge crowd that gathered on Main Street for the event. .
The afternoon began with
the swimfest at the pool with a large number of "splashers"
participating. Manager Staci Bertholf and her crew had contests ready
for the eager youngsters. Winners were (listed first, second and third

The Legion Beer Garden
opened in late afternoon and the stage was placed in front of the
building. Folks began assembling on Main Street early with many bringing
lawn chairs and were entertained by music from "Three Jacks and Joker"
while they waited. Many brought lawn chairs to await the kiddie/pet
parade which began at 6:30 p.m. Thee were 22 entries with multiple
children involved in most entry. The Thunder Ridge Kay Club helped keep
the children in their positions giving the judges an opportunity to name
their choices. After the children had processed twice around the Main
Street perimeter, each individual in the parade was presented a dollar
bill courtesy of the Farmers National Bank by Natalie Bienhoff, bank
employee.
Winning entries of the
parade were: Best theme--Kayden Hudson, Kaitlyn Rothe, and Leah Bienhoff with

The food and concession
stands opened with traditional sandwiches, homemade ice cream, and many
additional condiments and goodies and all reported brisk sales. Several
games and contests were available, and the small children enjoyed rides
on the train provided by Nex-Tech., the old-fashioned merry-go-round at
the kiddie park, and just having the freedom to roam the street. Egg
tosses for all ages were held with some excellent catches, but many of
the chicken's fruits hit the pavement. People enjoyed reminiscing and
visiting during this leisurely evening.
Bob Westbrook, Master of
Ceremonies for the evening, announced the winners of the drawings. The
prizes given by the Thunder Ridge Football Team were the pellet grill
won by Kirby Mullen, the 32-inch flat screen television by Wendell and
Terry Bohm, and the $100 bill by (name not available) of Marysville. The
stadium seats given by the Thunder Ridge Booster Club were awarded to
Judy Graf and Tricia Struckhoff.
Dance performances
were presented by the Little Dancers who attended dance camp earlier in
the summer assisted by the Sapphire Dance Group. The Sapphires also
performed under the direction of Jennifer Dodds. The Thunder Ridge
Middle School Cheerleaders sponsored by Kathy Boden and Cathy Schmid and
the High School Cheerleaders coached by Megan Hudson, showing off their
new silver and blue attire, also entertained the audience. It was
evident the Longhorns will have a enthusiastic support during the coming
year.
The guest performer for
the evening, Megan Brumbaugh of Logan, was introduced by Westbrook. He
noted that it was 15 years ago that Megan performed at Kensington's Old
Fashioned Saturday Night at the age of four. Everyone agreed that her
talent had blossomed through the years. She provided an hour of very
entertaining country and western music.
The beautiful fireworks
at Thunder Ridge Field went off like clockwork thanks to willing
volunteers. The breezes had subsided and the displays were gorgeous. The
evening then concluded with the street dance with music by Three Jacks
and a Joker.
Again, the community
wishes to thank the Kensington Commercial Club along with many
volunteers for making this event happen. It takes lots of planning to
get it organized. Be sure to tell them that it was a great evening and
also thank and support the businesses who make it possible with their
financial help. Also, don't forget the Lions Club, Churches, 4-H Clubs,
Nex-Tech, infibifusld and other organizations for providing the
concession and game booths. The evening couldn't have been more perfect
for an "Old Fashioned Saturday Night."
Friday was a bit hectic at
both the Agra and Kensington locations of Thunder Ridge Schools in
getting the students transferred on busses to the two locations, but
things went much smoother for the first full day of school Monday.

August 31 is again the
fifth Sunday of the month and is designated by the local churches as
Food Pantry Sunday. There is always a need for non-perishable food in
our community. When you are doing your shopping, buy several extra

Smith family to gather

August 31 for a noon covered dish dinner. There is no host family. All
relatives and friends are urged to attend.
Sabrina Hedding, new
English teacher at Thunder Ridge High School, will be delayed in
beginning her teaching duties. A daughter, Eowyn, was born to Sabrina
and Gene Hedding and was one of the three babies born at Hays Medical
Center on Friday, 8-8-08. None of these numbers mattered to Eowyn's
parents, though they do consider themselves lucky.
Eowyn (pronounced
Ay-oh-one), who weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. has a brother, Theoden (pronounced
Thay-uh-dun) who will be a year old on August 29. Both of the parents
are fans of older literature, and both children are named after
fictional characters from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
The Hedding family who
lives in Plainville is busy getting settled with their two children.
Mrs. Hedding will be commuting to Kensington for her teaching duties
after her maternity leave is over, and her husband, Gene, is employed
as a lineman for Western Cooperative Electric. (From Hays Daily News)

last week in the Smith County Hospital for observation and treatment.
His plans are to enter Prairie Haven for several weeks until his
strength returns.

written Monday, and she is hoping that additional surgery will not be
necessary.

Stokesbury and daughters arrived in Kensington last week from Japan for
a 2--weeks leave to visit relatives and friends. Anthony will continue
his service in the U.S Navy at a base in Norfolk, Virginia, after his
leave is over.
Louis and Kristi Seemann,
Alex, Ariel, and Ava of Overland Park spent the weekend with his mother,
Maria Seemann, and the Martin Seemann family. They enjoyed seeing
friends, and the children enjoyed the Old Fashioned Saturday Night.
The house on Highway 36,
home of the late Ruth Hainke Miller, was razed last week and the yard
cleaned and leveled.
It's been an unusually
cool, cloudy, humid week for August in Kansas. Kensington City received
about two inches of rain in a number of nighttime showers last week.
It's wonderful weather for gardens, and it keeps the lawn mowers
humming. Farmers are a bit antcy about the cloudy weather so late in
August. They would like to see sunshine and warmer temps to hasten the
milo along which was planted late and is running behind schedule.
The week began with the
usual greetings, fun and fitness exercises, and one-one sessions. The
beauty shop was open Monday and manicures were given. Summer vegetables
and inventions and inventors were interesting afternoon discussions.
Bingo was played Tuesday afternoon. Ruth Wolf came to play favorite
tunes on the piano for a sing-a-long Wednesday.
The United Church had the
Thursday morning Bible study followed by coffee, cookies and visiting.
Song titles and musical instruments were discussions in the afternoon.
The local news was read in the morning and bingo was played in the
afternoon. Movies, games, search-a-word puzzles. cards, and the Lawrence
Welk Show help to pass the evening hours.
