A special "Harrah" ceremony is planned as the Kensington high school  boys and girls play their last basketball games as GOLDBUGS in the Kensington gym Friday night when they play Logan. Information is still sketchy as this column is written Monday and plans are not finalized. All interested sports fans and Goldbug boosters are invited to be present between the girls and boys A team games at about 7 p.m. to participate for this nostalgic event.
 
A game that was rescheduled because of the snow storm will be played at Plainville Thursday, Feb. 14 beginning at 4 p.m. Regional tournaments will be held next week with times and places to be announced.
 
 
The Kensington/Agra Jaguars Jr. High team took first place at the GNEC tournament at Logan last week by defeating Damar. The girls team were defeated by Logan and received the second place trophy. This completes the Jaguar basketball games. They and their coaches are to be congratulated for a very good season. Complete stats will be found in the sports section of this publication.
 
 
Area schools will be participating in the GNEC Vocal Clinic at Kensington Thursday, Feb. 14, with rehearsals all afternoon with a guest clinician. The day will conclude with their combined concert in the Kensington gym at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend to enjoy and give encouragement to these young singers.

The Kensington Food Pantry will be open to provide non-perishable grocery items to those needing assistance Saturday, Feb. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kensington Senior Center. Please use the east door.

A Valentine King and Queen will be crowned at the lunch hour Thursday, Feb. 14. Ballots have been cast and will be tallied to determine the royal couple which will be announced in the column next week.
 
The Senior Center now has an answering machine so you can call in your meal reservations at any time.
 
Pitch will be played Thursday, Feb. 14. February birthdays will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 21.  Like to play Pinochle? Come to the Center Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. If you enjoy shooting pool, come and challenge some of the "pros".

Reminders of one room schools are on display in the show case at the Kensington Community/School Library. Thanks to Linda Rice, Roberta Kaba, Jane Whitney and Helen Hooper for sharing from their collections. Come in and reminisce about by-gone school days.
 
Jerry and Melba Hagman donated the colorful and interesting Junior non-fiction books, "The History of Wheat" and "The History of Corn", in memory of Arnold Levin.
 
The Library has been very busy the past week with the Scholastic Book Fair especially during the Parent/Teacher Conferences Monday. Thursday is the last day to make purchases. The aides will be busy packing up the displays Friday.
 
 
Lorraine Ormsbee died at Long Term Care Center in Smith Center Saturday, Feb. 8, 2008. Many persons received a part of their elementary education with Mrs. Ormsbee as their respected teacher in the Athol community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud. Survivors include her son and wife, Larry and Judy of Harmatage, Mo., and a grandson, Jeff.
 
Funeral services were held at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center Wednesday morning with Pastor Becky Saddler in charge. A more complete obituary will be available next week.
 
 
Navy military graveside services were held at the cemetery in Wilcox, Neb., Saturday for Rocky Fulmer, 51, of Kearney, Neb. He is the son of Jerald Fulmer and Twila Ames who run the antique store in Athol.
 
 
The great news is that Tyler Grauerholz is now with his brothers, Taylor and Brady, at the home of their parents, Brandon and Kara in Kearney, Neb. It is a time long awaited by the family since the birth of the triplets last September. Grandparents, Doc and Bev Grauerholz, visited them Saturday and report a very hectic schedule for the busy parents. All three boys will all have hernia surgery this coming week and it is hoped that then things will settle down a bit in the household.
 
 
Carson Lee Knipp, infant son of Chuck and Natalie (Hainke) Knipp of Victoria was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church during the worship service Sunday morning. His sponsors were Leslie Hainke (Natalie's sister) and Lucey Keller (Chuck's sister). Special music was by Greg, Robin and Nolan Billings. A dinner was served in the parish hall for the family and friends.
 
 
Clara Beckmann fell in her home Friday night and was taken to the Smith County Hospital. X-rays showed no broken bones, but she will spend several days for hospital care.
 
Bob Struckhoff is a patient at the Smith County Hospital for observation and tests.
 
Ellen Rust, formerly of Athol, fell and broke her hip last week. Surgery was done in Hastings, Neb.,  and she is now in swing bed at the hospital in Smith Center.
 
Richard Sasse, also a former resident of Athol community, has been receiving treatments in a hospital in Omaha but they were able to spend last week at their home in Smith Center. He is a nephew of Evelyn Norden and Clara Beckmann of Kensington.
 
Schools were closed in the area last Tuesday and Wednesday when snow with strong winds fell all day Tuesday producing white-out conditions and large drifts. Amounts of 5 and 6 inches were reported in the area. Thanks to all the good Samaritans that have helped so frequently clean the walks and streets during the many snow storms.  Thawing temperatures have produced a muddy-sloppy mess. Pick-ups and farm vehicles on Main Street are all the same color--a muddy-colored tan.
 
Kensington FFA hosted the annual meats judging contest at the Kensington Lockers Saturday with many members participating. Butch Whelchel, FFA advisor, will have a full report in another section of this paper. The Kensington team will participate in meats contests at Eustis, Neb., on Feb. 23 and Curtis, Neb., on Feb. 27.
 
The high school chemistry class traveled to Concordia Monday for a field study. Frank Groenewoller is their teacher.
 
Sheila and Randy Dues arrived back in Kensington Friday greeted by signs and yellow ribbons welcoming Sheila home from Iraq. She stated that the response was overwhelming.
 
Eulonda Hagman hosted Sunday dinner at her home honoring Melvin and Lavona Gruber of Concordia along with other family members with February birthdays.
 
Janeen Landoll of Marysville and Pat Mancusco of Lees Summit, Mo.,   spent several days last week with their mother, Ruth Wolf and accompanied her to a doctor's appointment in Hays.
 
Armi McPherson reports the birth of another great-grandson, Jacob Peter, born to her granddaughter, Tiffany Jo and Donald Werth of Omaha on Feb. 7. Jacob weighed eight pounds one ounce.
 
 
Each day begins with greetings, fun and fitness exercises and one-one sessions held during the day. Jenny Reilley had the beauty shop open Monday morning and Carmen Rice did nail care. Favorite soups savored taste buds Monday afternoon with residents shared things that made them happy. Bingo was played Tuesday afternoon and search-a-word puzzles were done. Chocolate desserts and ice box facts were topics Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Heartland Worship Center had the Thursday morning Bible study followed by fellowship with coffee and cookies. The meaning of roses for valentine's day was read in the afternoon and facts of Vacitan City were given. The local news was read from the Pioneer Friday morning and bingo was played in the afternoon. Watching movies and game shows, and playing cards and putting puzzles together are enjoyed in the evenings.
 
The Heartland Worship Center with Pastor Darrell and Jeri Schmid with Georgetta Kinyon as pianist had the Sunday afternoon worship in the living room for the residents and guests.

Pastor Patsy Koeneke of Kensington proudly announces the birth of her first grandchild, Carter Wesley, on Feb. 11. Parents are Brian and Erica Koeneke of Phoenix, Ariz. Carter weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces. Pastor Koeneke plans to visit the family later this month.
