The Cleon Dettmer Charitable Trust is offering scholarships to Post-Secondary students. The scholarship is available to full time students (one to four scholarships will be available) seeking a bachelor, associate, or other technical/vocational degree/diploma. This scholarship is only available to Eastern Heights and Kensington graduates, and in the future, Thunder Ridge graduates.
 
The amount of the scholarship is not set by the Trust as of now; however, it will be a minimum of $500 and possibly more. Application deadline is April 1, 2008.

For further information contact Jill Stoelting, Guidance Counselor, at the Kensington High School or the Trust Department of the Smith County State Bank and Trust Company in Smith Center.
 

 
Librarian Monica Wagner and her aides are busy preparing for the Scholastic Book Fair at the Kensington Community/School Library Thursday, Feb. 7, through Friday, Feb. 15. The Family Event on Monday, Feb. 11, will be during Parent/Teacher Conferences. The class with the greatest percentage of parent participation earns free books for their teacher's classroom library. See you at the Book Fair!
 
 
The HOME Foundation had the annual meeting after the soup dinner they sponsored on Jan. 13. Present were Amber Nonamaker, Ann Abbott, Deb Ferguson, Grace Hainke, Nancy Hagman, Emily Blank, Bev Grauerholz, Judy Graf, and Evelyn Levin.
 
The minutes were read by Emily and approved. Evelyn Levin and Patty Kuhlmann were accepted as new board members. Officers elected or re-elected were Bev, president; Deb, v. president; Emily, secretary; and Grace, treasurer.
 
Discussion was held on the HOME Community Wellness Center. The Sunday hours were changed from 4 until  7 p.m. to 2 until 5 p.m. effective Feb.1. It was decided to use the money raised at the Soup Luncheon towards the insurance at the HOME Community Wellness Center. Emily Blank, Secretary.

Birthdays Celebrated At Center
 
Nineteen persons came to enjoylunch for the birthday party on Jan. 17. Celebrants present were Patty Hainke, Bessie Bierman, Luetta Beckman, Georgetta Kinyon and Lorraine Grauerholz. Lorraine's daughter and husband, Shirley and Jack Smith of Wichita were her special guests.
 
Pinochle will be played Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
 
Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Super Bowl Soup Supper at the Center Sunday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. On the menu will be cheesy potato soup, ham & beans, turkey salad sandwiches, salads, desserts, and good fellowship. Table service will be furnished. Donations for the food will be taken. Everyone is invited to come and support our Community Center.

Neva Jensen, 95, of Kensington died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Prairie Haven Nursing Home. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Leon (Harold) in 1994.
 
Survivors include two daughters, Reta Savener of Clay Center, Kans., and Janyth Hotchkiss of Gresham, Ore.; three sisters, Eleanora Ratliff of Smith Center, Aleen Schalansky of Kensington, and Ella Marie DuBois of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
 
The funeral was Thursday morning at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Patsy Koeneke officiating. Burial was in the Germantown Cemetery.
 
 
Death of Robert McCorkle   
 
Robert McCorkle, 74, Salida, Colo., died Jan. 4, 2008. He was born at Athol where he attended school and grew to manhood. He was a retired maintenance foreman for Martin Marietta in Denver.
 
Survivors include his wife, Maggie; a son, Robert Jr. of Westminster, Colo; a daughter,  Beth McCorkle of Littleton, Colo.; three brothers, Don of Payallup, Wash., Scott of Sabetha, Kans., and George of Aurora, Colo; two sisters, Mae McDonald of Smith Center and Jane Trent of Phillipsburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
 
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Salida. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Salida, Colo.
 
 
Tara Seemann is scheduled for surgery today (Monday) at Wichita. She hopes to be home in several days.
 
Larry Miller is home from the hospital in Kearney, Neb., where he had bi-pass surgery on his leg.
 
Little Brady Grauerholz joined his brother, Taylor, at home last week with their parents, Brandon and Kara , in Kearney. Their triplet brother, Tyler, is still at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, but they hope he can be dismissed soon, too. The triplets were born in September three months prematurely so it has been a long four months to get these little guys home together.
 
Brittany Kirchhoff received a very good report from the ear specialist in Omaha last week There is no damage to her hearing from the sledding accident before Christmas Brittany is attending school for half days and hopes to get to go full time soon.
 
Our thoughts are with Wanda Fink on the death of her brother-in-law, Robert Fink, 71, of McPherson. He was a brother of the late Leonard Fink.  The funeral was Thursday at the Mortuary in Phillipsburg with burial in the Agra Cemetery.
 
It's another frigid day with possible snow flurries. January is like a severe headache; the only good thing about it is, "It feels so good when it is gone." Temperatures may climb into low 40's by the weekend which will really seem nice.
 
 
Good morning greetings and fun and fitness exercises begin each day. One-one sessions are held daily. Jenny Reilley had the beauty shop open Monday morning and Carmen Rice stayed busy giving manicures. The residents enjoyed testing their knowledge on a geography quiz in the afternoon. Bingo was played Tuesday afternoon.
 
The third and fourth grade students came Wednesday for visiting and play time with their adopted grandparents. This is always fun for everyone. Ruth Wolf had a sing-along with her piano music.
 
First St. John Lutheran Church had the Thursday morning Bible class. Coffee, refreshments and lots of visiting followed. The Pioneer was read Friday morning and bingo was played in the afternoon.
 
Games along with movies and shows such as the Lawrence Welk Show are often viewed on the big screen television set.
 
St. John Lutheran Church had the Sunday worship and communion service with Pastor Patsy Koeneke officiating. She was assisted by Linda Miller and Eulonda Hagman with Ruth Bienhoff as pianist.
 
Sympathy is extended to the family of Neva Jensen who passed away last Monday evening. Her daughters, Janyth Hotchkiss of Oregon, and Reta Savaner of Clay Center, spent much time with her.
 
Recent visitors signing the register were Maria Seemann with friends; Bonnie Slavik with Clara Slavik; Luetta Beckmann, Esther Norden, Marlene Kuhlmann and Jack and Shirley Smith with Lorraine Grauerholz; Don and Pat Bienhoff with Douglas and Mae Donovan and Mary and Montra Jones; Teresa and Terry Smith with Irene Smith; JoAnn Rice and Ada Gaines with Frances Gaines and Bill Rice; Bob and Jan Zeigler with Lucille Schoeni; Gilbert Kuhlmann with Betty Kuhlmann.
 
 
Willie and Olivia Rogers of Overland Park announce the birth of their son, Oscar Milton, on January 21. Oscar weighed 9 lbs. 1 oz., and has a big brother, Henry, 3. Grand parents are Jon and Linda Ferguson of Kensington and David and Sandy Rogers of Overland Park. Aleen Schalansky of Kensington is a great-grandmother.
