Ball games are almost the
only social things going on
in the community as
activities are "on hold"
awaiting the wheat harvest.
Farmers are getting anxious
as the harvest is later than
usual this year due to lots
of rain, cloudy and damp
weather, and cooler
temperatures. Most farmers
do think that test cutting
will begin later this week
with harvest in full swing
by July 1, depending on the
weather, of course. Showers
are a possibility each day
this week. Everyone hopes
that there will be no more
hail storms.
Hail adjustors have been in
the area making their
judgments on crops and
buildings that received
damage in the past several
weeks. The hailed wheat
fields look more
discouraging as time passes.
Most of the houses in
Kensington that were
reshingled because of
damages in May, 2007, will
have to be redone because of
the hail storm that hit
Kensington on June 5 of this
year. One roofer stated that
they had completed the
shingling on one home at 3
p.m. and the hail storm hit
at 5 p.m. The roof is
again totally damaged and
will have to be replaced.
The fifth Sunday of the
month is designated as Food
Pantry Sunday by the local
churches. Donations are
requested on Sunday, June
30, and may be left at the
local churches. There was a
heavy run on the Pantry last
Saturday so shelves need to
be restocked. Items that are
in short supply are
spaghetti sauce, hamburger
helper, macaroni & cheese,
pork & beans, juice, sugar,
pudding mixes and vegetable
oil.
Volunteers for Support Our
Soldiers (S.O.S.) have
just mailed another shipment
of packages to our
servicemen and women
overseas and already are
planning their next
shipment. They need Pringle
containers. They use these
to pack the many dozens of
home baked cookies they send
each time. Do not throw
these containers in the
trash, but save them and, at
a later date, the collection
place will be announced.
Thanks for your help.
Erin Ferguson and Melissa Nonamaker
have "bugs all over the
place" as they host
the Summer Story Hour at the
Kensington Community/School
Library each Tuesday
afternoon. They are doing
many interesting projects
and are reading some
fascinating books in
correlation to the children
with the theme, "Catch the
Reading Bug." Many books on
"bugs" are on display and
available for checkout. If
your children have not
attended previously, it is
not too late to have them
join the fun. Preschool thru
Grade 1 meet at 1 p.m. and
Grades 2 thru 5 gather at 2
p.m.
Twenty-eight diners came to
enjoy the birthday meal on
June 19. June honorees
present were Guy Billings,

crossword puzzle were a
challenge for all. Six
persons stayed to play
double deck Pinochle.

Members of the K-town
Kates and several guests
drove to Republican
City, Neb., Sunday
afternoon planning to
see the play, "Midsummer
Night's Dream", at the
Theatre of the American
West. When they arrived,
the theatre was locked
up. Inquiries were made
at a neighboring
business and the group
was told that there had
been a difference of
opinion by the staff
and cast and all shows
were cancelled until
further notice.
The afternoon was not
lost, however. The very
interesting museum near
the theatre was visited
and an early dinner was
enjoyed at Little Mexico
on the Lake. The higher
water levels and boaters
on the Lake were
interesting to watch.
The beautiful drive with
the green roadsides
and trees, herds of
contented cattle in
pastures (no deer, thank
goodness), waving wheat
fields, and newly
planted acres of corn
and milo were also
enjoyed.
Teresa Smith was readmitted
to a hospital in Kansas City
for further
testing following her recent
surgery there. We hope she
can come home soon again.
Sympathy is extended to
Evelyn Norden and Clara
Beckmann on the death of
their nephew, Richard Sasse,
69, of Smith Center
Saturday, June 21. The
funeral was Tuesday at St.
John Lutheran Church of
Athol with burial in
Fairview Cemetery, Smith
Center. His surviving wife,
Marilyn, and family were
doubly hit with sadness as
Marilyn's mother, Helen
Goodman, 90, of Smith Center
died on June 19, and the
funeral was Monday at
Simmons Rentscler Mortuary
in Smith Center.
A large bus in front of the
United Church of Kensington
Sunday morning attracted a
lot of attention. The
congregation was privileged
to hear a concert by
Simple Grace Ministries from
Lincoln, Neb. The group
which included the parents
and five of their eight
children played many
different instruments and
did beautiful singing. The
talented family was highly
received and appreciated by
all who heard them. A
potluck dinner was served in
the basement before the
group took off for their
next stop at the church in
Long Island.
Brillon Clayton, infant son
of Darin and Brooke (Scott)
McDowell, was baptized at
First St. John Lutheran
Church Sunday morning by
Pastor Dave Hutson. His
sponsors were Cody and
Bethanie (Long) McDowell. A
dinner in the parish hall
was enjoyed after the
service.
Paint and floor finish fumes
impregnate the air as you
walk past the school gym.
Changing the colors from
black and gold to silver and
royal blue and lettering
from Kensington to Thunder
Ridge creates many changes.
The new district will become
effective July 1, 2008, and
this date is rapidly
approaching.
The basement for the
addition to Mike and Beccy
Isom's house has been dug
and construction will soon
begin. Mike and his brother
plan to do the work.
Weston, Shelton, and Hannah
Rothchild of Smith Center

grandparents, Darold and
Joyce Grauerholz. Hannah is
the newly adopted daughter
of Shannon and Kristi
Rothchild and was introduced
by their grandparents to the
congregation at the worship
service at St. John Lutheran
Sunday morning.

Al Lambert had a wonderful
trip to Colorado recently.
Wilma Starks of Loveland,
Colo., accompanied Al and
his brother, Robert from the
Denver area, to Grand
Junction, Colo., where they
helped another brother,

birthday. Al says they had a
wonderful time.
Jacob Christie, KHS class of
2008, has begun his
schooling at Kansas State
University-Salina, during
the summer session. He will
study to be a pilot.
Your correspondent was out
at St. John Lutheran Church
this (Monday) morning for
some errands and a couple
from Denver in a motor home
had stopped on the parking
lot. The woman was taking
photos of the undisturbed
birds in the shelter belt.
She stated that they had
been to Indiana to visit her
mother and had stopped at
this spot before to enjoy
the birds. Yes, folks, we do
have great attractions in
Kansas, but we often fail to
appreciate them until
someone from another area
calls our attention to them.
Armi McPherson attended a
family reunion at Hastings,
Neb., over the weekend.
There were about 100
attending.
Folks, it's difficult to
write a news column when you
don't have anything to write
about. Please inform your
correspondent of happenings
in your family, church or
community. It's also been
requested that parents
report items of our youth,
where they are and what they
are doing.
The usual beauty shop hair
care and manicures were
given Monday morning.
One-one sessions are
scheduled routinely. Trivia
was shared in the afternoon.
Bingo was played Tuesday
afternoon and facts were
discussed. Ruth Wolf came
Wednesday to play favorite
piano music with a
sing-along for the
residents.
Georgetta Kinyon of the
Heartland Worship Center had
the Thursday morning Bible
study followed by
refreshments and visiting.
There was a lot of feed-back
when residents talked about
their fishing experiences
during the afternoon sharing
session. The local news was
read Friday morning and
bingo was played in the
afternoon. Other activities
enjoyed were working puzzles
and doing search-a-words,
playing cards and watching
movies.
Heartland Worship Center had
the Sunday afternoon
devotions.
