Lions Busy with Community Service Projects

Kensington Lions Club members are looking forward to a number of activities of community service in the next two weeks. The Nov. 3 meeting is Veterans' Night in tribute to our servicemen and women.

Activities in conjunction with the Nov. 8 Veterans' Day festivities in Kensington are: Candy Day fun solicitation before the parade to support Lions Sight programs; a float in the parade; and the delivering of meals by Lions with the help of Thunder Ridge KAY members to Country View, Prairie Haven, Community/Senior Center, and individual homes. Anyone who wishes to have their meal at the Center needs to sign up with the Center's director. People who would like to have meals delivered to their home are asked to please contact Lions President Don Wiens by Thursday, Nov. 6, with the number and names of people who need to be served at that home. This allows for the service to be made available to all who wish to use it and assures no one is left out.

On Sunday, Nov. 9, the Lions will have their annual Pancake Feed at the Kensington American Legion. Serving time will be 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Come and enjoy pancakes, sausages, and eggs, and help support Lions Club activities in the local community.

Program to Honor Veterans' at TR Middle School

The program will include patriotic musical selections and readings by students, and special recognition of all servicemen and women.

Students Help Load S.O.S Packages

Thunder Ridge High School conditioning class under the tuterage of Scott Panter made quick work of loading the S.O.S. materials from the S.O.S. Center on Kensington Main Street into a National Guard semi to be transported to Hays Thursday morning. At Hays these partially assembled materials were packaged into boxes ready for mailing to servicemen and women the middle of this week in time for Christmas. Volunteers in Hays packaged the 1,000 boxes on Saturday. Melanie Elliott is the local co-ordinator for this gigantic project. Many local folks donated items, helped sort, group materials and pre-package them into plastic bags, and baked cookies.

Mr. Panter rewarded each student with a cold drink at the Kensington Community Store after the loading was finished. The students returned to their classes with a good feeling that they had helped with the S.O.S. project.

Play Rehearsals Have Begun at High School

Students at the Thunder Ridge High School will be presenting their fall play, "Hospital HiJinx", on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 & 16 (this is the weekend after Veterans' Day). More About School Staff

If you arrive at the Thunder Ridge Elementary School before noon on a school day, you will be greeted with the wonderful aroma of a good meal about to be served to the students. All breads, buns, rolls, cookies, etc., are homemade in the kitchen by two very able cooks. Chris Engelke has twenty years experience of feeding the hungry throng. She is married to Duane and they live on a farm south-east of Kensington. They have two grown children. She is a very busy farmers helper, but enjoys scrapbooking when she can find the time.

Mrs. Engelke is assisted by Dianna (Susie) Olesen who has five years experience in the lunchroom. Dianna lives in Kensington with her husband, Chris, and son Troy who graduated from KHS in 2003 and Chad, a seventh grader at Thunder Ridge. She has a total of five children. She enjoys playing bingo and riding motorcycles.

Custodians are Curis Lamont, Andy Gibson, and Donna Johnson. Mrs. Johnson also helps the cooks serve the noonday meals. Connie Nelson helps in the Library during the morning hours. High school paras are Travis Abbot, Sharon Bearley, and Marsha Pennington.

The bus drivers keep busy transporting the students to the appropriate schools, to sporting and school events, and on field trips. This writer did not contact them as their schedules do change. Special thanks to all those involved in Thunder Ridge schools who help to maintain a good, safe education for our students.
Around the Community

Many health concerns surfaced in the community last week. Due to privacy restrictions names will not be printed. Please remember these folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers as you become aware of their problems.

Velma Black, 81, mother of Deanna Nech, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Prairie Haven where she has resided for several years. She was a former math and science teacher. Survivors besides Deanna are a daughter and two sons, all of Topeka and nine grandchildren. The funeral and burial was Sunday in Topeka.

Relatives here received word of the death of Ralph "Bud" Wiehl of Junction City Saturday, Oct. 25. He graduated from Kensington High School in 1938. It is hoped that a more complete obituary will be available at a later date.

Eleanora Ratliff will celebrate her 90th birthday Sunday, Nov. 2. Cards may be sent to her at 115 S. Lincoln , Smith Center, KS 66967.

Lance Steiger, son-in-law of Sterling and Joan Hardisty, was seriously injured in an auto accident last week. At last report, he was still in a coma.

Kelli Johnson, daughter of Lee and Donna Johnson, spent the weekend of October 17-20 in Dallas, TX with her sister Misti Johnson, and future brother-in-law Matt Olthoff. Kelli drove to Lawrence Friday to spend time with her good friend Beth Nech. While in Lawrence, Beth styled (cut/highlighted) Kelli's hair. Beth then took Kelli to the KC Airport. Kelli's flight arrived at Dallas Love-Field Airport Friday evening where she was greeted by Matt, Misti, and Kenna (beagle puppy).

Misti and Kelli visited IKEA, PetCo, and a Pump-it-Up 5th birthday party for one of Misti's former students on Saturday and the evening was spent at the loft, enjoying a home-cooked meal by Matt and watching the Wildcat football game. Sunday morning, Misti and Kelli walked to the JFK Memorial Plaza and toured The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza, downtown Dallas, about 6 blocks from Matt and Misti's loft.

Monday morning, bright and early, Kelli's flight left Love-Field. When she arrived in KC she was picked up by Beth Nech. After stopping in Lawrence, Kelli headed back to Hays making it in time for her afternoon class at Ft. Hays State U.

Rod and Judy Billings of Colorado Springs were here several days last week with Guy Billings.

Kansas pheasant hunting will begin early Saturday morning. The washed out roads and muddy fields may prove interesting for the city visitors that come for this annual event.

The freezing temperatures early this week have killed the tomato vines and flowers that were still in bloom. Trees are losing their leaves without turning the usual fall colors.

Soggy fields and many mud holes are the result of the 4.5 inches rains which fell during several days last week. The ground was already saturated from previous rains making a total of about ten inches during the month of October to date. The bright note is that the predicted possible snow did not materialize with the strong winds which accompanied the slow moving weather fronts. A killing frost is predicted for tonight (Monday) before a warming trend with sunshine moves in for the coming week. Farmers are antcy, and it's better to tread lightly when mentioning the weather and fall harvest awaiting the combines.
Notes from Prairie Haven

The Heartland Worship Center had the Thursday morning Bible study followed by fellowship and visiting. The Pioneer was read Friday morning to those interested and bingo was played. The Lawrence Welk Show, Hee Haw, game shows and movies were enjoyed on television. Other puzzles and card games were held in the evening.

The Heartland Worship Center with Pastor Darrell and Jeri Schmit and Georgetta Kinyon had the Sunday afternoon worship service.

Welcome to Helen Bates of Lucas who is Prairie Haven's newest resident. She is the mother of Alan Bates. Helen and her husband lived in Kensington one summer while her husband worked for Pro-Ag.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Velma Black, especially to Deanna Nech of Kensington and others in the Topeka area. She will be sadly missed by residents and staff.
