K-town Kates Make Local Tour

Eleven K-town Kates motored to Smith Center on August 26 to tour the Smith County Historical Society buildings. Several women were present to lead the group and answer questions. Of special interest was the restored car that the late Roy "Hoopy" Bales would drive in parades which is displayed at the site.

They then went to the Hardly Used Shop in downtown Smith Center which Mimi Gray and Maxine Meyer arranged for them to visit during the evening. They enjoyed seeing the many items for sale and were escorted down to the basement to see how the items are sorted for display and arranged according to seasons. The women stated that no items are kept over two weeks and then boxed and sent to Goodwill which was of special interest to the Kates which were very impressed with the Shop.

Afterwards the group had dinner at the Vineyard Room at Pooch's. A short business meeting was held and plans made for the next excursion to the Arch at Kearney, Neb. Barbara Grauerholz planned the evening's events.

Nathan weighed 8 pounds 8 ounces and has two brothers, Ryan, 4, and Dylan, 2, for playmates. The maternal grandparents are Leo and Eulalia Ochs of Quinter. The Hoversons went to make the acquaintance of little Nathan over the weekend.

Birth

Ben and Sheila Nech of Dodge City proudly announce the birth of their first child, Josephine Ann, at a hospital in Wichita on August 28. Josephine weighed 4 pounds 11 ounces. Her grandparents are Bruce and Deanna Nech of Kensington and Kelvin and Glenna Smith of Long Island. E.R. (Bud) and Rosalee Nech of Kensington are proud great-grandparents.

Kensington's Flu Clinic Thursday

The 2009 seasonal flu clinic for Kensington will be Thursday, Sept. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Kensington Community/Senior Center. The Smith County Health Department is in charge. Please bring insurance information or payment of $30 in order to receive this vaccination. (This vaccination is NOT for the H1N1 (Swine) Flu which will probably be available later this fall.)

This early seasonal flu shot will work through the entire flu season regardless of how early individuals receive this vaccination in late August or September when vaccine is available. The goal for individuals, especially those at high risk of developing complications from influenza, is to receive a seasonal flu vaccination before influenza activity is taking place in the community.

Lots of City Improvements

The Kensington City Council contracted with the Norton Correctional Facility for workers to come to Kensington for two weeks to do maintenance jobs. During this time the workers painted and put up new playground equipment at the swimming pool park, put in new posts at the City Roadside Park, and painted the light poles on Kensington's Main Street. (The latter was erroneously reported last week as being a project of the Prairie Land Electric Company.) The labor for these projects is free, but the city provided the equipment and supplies for these projects.

Another project of the City was the fixing-up at the City Roadside Park this summer. The trees and shrubbery have been trimmed, new concrete tables and benches were put up, several barbecue pits have been built, playground equipment was repaired and updated, and many other projects were done by employees and volunteers to bring this park back to the beauty of its origin. The park is frequently used by tourists, and it is hoped that local folks will also take advantage of the facility for picnics and outings. Come down to the park and see all the improvements that have been made this summer.

A number of Kensington streets have also been resurfaced by Levin Construction during the summer months after a winter that made many repairs necessary. If you are pleased with the many improvements, tell a member of the City Council. If you have ideas about future projects, they would also like to hear about them so Kensington will continue to be "the biggest little town of its size in the state of Kansas."

A memorial was dedicated to honor Sgt. Joel Murray on the Main Street of the town of Simpson on Sunday, August 23, 2009. Sgt. Murrary died while serving his country in Iraq on Sept. 4, 2007. Sgt. Also present were Doug and Wanda Rahjes and Don and Carol Rahjes. Wanda and Carol were Erin's sponsors. A dinner was held at the Dolezal home following the worship.

Arthur and Betty Smith enjoyed a ten-day camping trip at Lake George, Colo., recently where they were joined by Dee and Roseanne Panter of Elkhart. The area made national news when the Lake George area was hit by a very rare tornado while they were there. They had no damage. They enjoyed a two-day tractor pull, book fair and craft show besides the cool mountain camping.

Leona Conaway reports that she is gaining strength, feeling better and will enjoy the company of her daughter, Vona of Texas this week.

Leland and Linda Rahjes returned recently from a cruise to Alaska in celebration of their tenth wedding anniversary. They report a wonderful time and lots of interesting sight-seeing.

Brad and Mona Marler have recently moved to Tipton, Iowa, from Middleton, N.Y., to be nearer their relatives and their two grandchildren in Osborne. Brad has taken a position with a fiberglass company that manufactures tanks. Mona is doing well since her recent surgery.

Cecilia Grauerholz of Phillipsburg, formerly of Kensington, is scheduled for back surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney Tuesday.

It was a beautiful evening for the Ted Levin Estate Sale Friday evening with a large crowd and many interested buyers in attendance. The houses were not sold at the auction.

Evelyn Norden met her son, Gary of New York City, at the Salina Airport last Wednesday and they are enjoying a nice visit together.

Goldie Brunow enjoyed an early celebration of her 80th birthday by accompanying her daughter, Brenda Grauerholz of Beloit and Janeen Wallgren of Phillipsburg, for a few days in Estes Park, Colo. The weather allowed them to attend two evening concerts, view beautiful sunsets, and close up sightings of elk and deer. One day they went up the Trail Ridge Road to view lots of wildlife and the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

On the evening of August 14, her actual birthday, at the close of the Praise in the Park service, Pastor Dave Hutson announced that it was Goldie's birthday and she was serenaded with the birthday song by the musicians and all attending. During the week there were get-togethers with family and friends, and she received many cards and greetings from across the United States, from Newfoundland to California!!

This area received a beneficial 1.5 to 2 inches of rain in thunderstorms early last Wednesday morning. It was perfect to bring the fall crops to maturity as well as ready the wheat ground for seeding later this month. The temperatures have been more like fall than late August giving the air-conditioners a well-earned rest and making for perfect sleeping weather.

First St. John Lutheran Church had their summer picnic and praise service at the Harlan Lake near Alma, Neb., Sunday afternoon. The younger folks enjoyed boating, swimming, water skiiing and other water sports before the picnic supper was served. The evening concluded with a hymn sing.

Janette Stallings of Bellevue, Neb., spent the last two weeks of August visiting her mother, Armi McPherson. They enjoyed local sightseeing and participating in the events in the community. It gave Janette an opportunity to relax and refocus on her health and enjoy the quietness and safety of her mother's home in Kensington.

Janette returned home to her husband, Thomas, who finishes his BS in Nursing at UNMC this year and Janette started classes on August 29 to earn her teaching certificate in language arts. Having completed her MA degree more than ten years ago, she thinks it will be quite a change. She states she really enjoyed her time in Kensington and everyone's hospitality.

Glen Ennis of Country View called your correspondent expressing appreciation for our EMT's, First Responders, and Firemen. Sunday afternoon Glen was checking on his neighbor, Sandra Kent, and found her in need of special help. He called 911 and said the EMT's were the first to arrive almost as soon as he had completed the call and the Firemen were there soon after. He is so pleased to think we live in such a caring community with such quick responders coming to our aid as well as having neighbors that care enough to check on each other. Mrs. Kent was taken to the Smith County Hospital for further evaluation.
