Ty Wallgren Family Warns of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Ty and Jeni Wallgren, Brock and Zach of Kensington know first hand of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and want to warn their many friends.

Brock and Zach were asleep in the basement and woke up about 3 a.m. Saturday morning with symptoms of stomach flu and severe nausea. They then slept upstairs, but by 6 a.m. both they and their mother Jeni were suffering from excruciating headaches. Zach went to take a shower and passed out and the family got suspicious. Ty took the family to the home of Ken and Wanda Ellenberger to get them out of the house and called the gas company who sent a representative over immediately. The carbon monoxide levels were extremely high as the rep entered the house and graduated rapidly the closer he came to the furnace.

The family was taken to the Smith County Hospital where tests were run and they were put on oxygen. They were dismissed about 8 p.m. Sunday evening. They spent the night in the Cottonwood Inn in Phillipsburg and David Hesterman was called to come and install a new furnace in their home. . Dave was there at 8 a.m. Monday morning to take care of the matter.

In a phone call to this reporter from Ty Wallgren he states. "Don't wait if your entire family develops symptoms of flu at the same time and has excruciating headaches. Get out of the house and call the gas company immediately." Ty states that as of tonight (Monday) there are three new carbon monoxide detectors in their house. It's not worth risking the lives of your family and the $40 that could prevent a tragedy from happening as it almost did to their family. This type of gas is so dangerous because it is colorless and odorless.

TR Middle School Receives Governor's Award

The fourth annual Governor's Achievement Awards, honoring top performing schools in the state, were recently announced. Forty-one elementary schools, 12 middle/junior high schools, and 17 high schools in Kansas qualified for the award. Thunder Ridge Middle School received this award for the 2008-2009 year.

To receive this prestigious award, schools must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and mathematics for 2009. Additionally, the school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both reading and mathematics and one additional measure in 2009. For elementary schools and middle-junior high school that measure is attendance and for high school the measure is graduation rate. Additionally, the school must have been among the top 5 percent of schools in both reading and mathematics on the 2009 state assessments at its respective level, I.e. elementary schools, middle/junior high schools, or high schools.

Around the Community

Dixie Hesterman has been struggling with a case of flu the past week. She is being assisted with her care in their home by Elaine Morgan.

The open heart surgery and complications of Cathy Diercks of Agra has touched many hearts in the community. Her husband, Garen, is an employee of Pro Ag Marketing and Cathy was a devoted daycare provider in her home. She had open heart surgery on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and suffered a stroke the next day. On Saturday she had a heart attack and catherization corrected a kink in an artery. Her condition is improved as this column is written Monday afternoon and she may be moved from ICU into a private room soon. The family is far from home and if anyone is in the Omaha vicinity be sure to stop for a short visit at the Creighton University Medical Center.

Terry Smith is home and very weak from his recent heart procedure. We're sure a greeting card or note would be greatly appreciated.

The community mourns the death of Mary Karlin, 61, of Phillipsburg on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. She is the wife of Larry Karlin who is a custodian at the Thunder Ridge Middle School in Agra. Three sons also survive. The funeral will be Wednesday morning at the St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria with burial in the church cemetery.

Sympathy is extended to Marj Meyer of Wichita on the death of her brother, Richard Anderson, 86, of Portis on Dec. 9, 2009. Marj, formerly of Kensington, now resides in Wichita to be nearer her children.

The two remaining houses of the Ted Levin Estate were sold at auction by Lee Oliver at the Kensington Community Center Friday morning. Otto and Cheryl Levin bought the house at 223 N. Washington for $14,000. The house at 212 W. Pine was purchased by Robert Gruenberg of California. According to Mr. Oliver he has purchased a number of houses at auction in this area and fixes them up and keeps them in good repair. Mr. Oliver also states that he thinks Mr. Gruenberg might be interested in moving to this area sometime in the future.

Jackie Weitzell of Le Grand, Iowa, is visiting her daughter, Linda and Leland Rahjes. Linda and Leland attended a wedding of Linda's cousin in southern Texas on Dec. 5 and were hoping to get away from the Kansas cold but got into in the unusual snowfall that hit Texas.

Newton Youngquist decided not to go to a large mall to be Santa Claus this year because of the possibility of getting the flu from the children. He has done this for a number of years leaving about Thanksgiving and coming back right at Christmas.

In a quick street visit with James Jirak, manager of Pro Ag, he states enough milo has been sold that as soon as it can be transported to the main terminals, they can begin moving the huge piles stored on the ground into the local elevators for storage. He is hoping this can begin the end of January.
