Hats Off to Our
Many Volunteers
It's hard find news to write a column in
the midst of the busy time of summer so
your correspondent would like to give
tribute this week to all the things that
"make life worth living" in our
community.
Let's being with our Kensington
Volunteer Fire Department and EMT's that
will drop whatever they are doing to
answer the emergency calls directed to
them. Not only are they willing to give
of their time and expertise, but they
also are willing to risk their lives, if
necessary, to perform their duties.
Several fires in the community recently
could have been disastrous were it not
for the quick action of these
volunteers. The EMT's and our local
ambulance always accompanies the fire
trucks, but are also called to assist in
taking an ill or injured person to the
hospital for emergency attention.
Another group that should be thanked are
the storm watchers who leave their
families at home and go to open country
to watch the clouds, study radar, and
listen to weather radios to warn our
citizens of possible approaching
tornadoes, wind or hail. Thankfully, we
have not little had need for them this
spring and summer, but it was different
last year when almost every thunderstorm
carried some form of storm warning.
These guys keep a watchful eye to be
able to warn and give everyone ample
opportunity to seek shelter in time.
Then there are the drivers that are
willing to transport patients to
doctor's appointments, therapy
treatments and dialysis sessions, and to
those that deliver meals to shut-ins or
check on neighbors. The drop-in visitor
that comes just to say "Hello" or stops
on the street to ask sincerely, "How are
you?" and then takes the time to listen
is so appreciated. Yes, thanks even to
the neighbor that happens to see your
light during the night or earlier than
usual in the morning and checks to see
if
you are all right. This list only
scratches the surface of the many
helpful things that are done each day in
our caring community.
Last, but certainly most important, are
the friends and neighbors that lift up
their prayers in the time of need. Most
of these folks don't realize what a gift
they are to others until they are in the
need of help themselves.
Please remember to thank these and
others for their kindness. Aren't you
glad you live in a caring community? I
certainly am, and I thank God for each
one of you!!

Rain Sunday Morning
Thunderstorms with lots of lightning
dropped .30 rain in Kensington city but
got much heavier the further south it
went with Claudell reporting 1.80.
Heavier amounts of up to .70 in the
Beulah area north of Kensington are also
reported. Since almost all of the wheat
harvest is completed, the moisure was
appreciated for the corn, milo and
soybeans.

Lots of Concerns
in the Local Community
Gayle Cole was taken by ambulance to the
Smith County Hospital Wednesday morning
and the transferred to the Good
.Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.,
after suffering a fall in her home. She
had surgery that evening for a
concussion and other injuries. Her
recovery is slow, but as good as can be
expected.
One of Kensington's oldest citizens,
Mary Anthony, had emergency surgery
Saturday morning at the Smith County
Hospital for an internal perforation. It
will be a lengthy convalescence. Her
daughter Patty of Manhattan is currently
here with her.
Becky Isom is recovering from back
surgery and hopes to be feeling good by
the time school starts.

living in Billings, Montana, suffered a
stroke this past week. No other

Sharilyn Currey is scheduled for surgery
on her ankle in Manhattan today
(Monday).

Sympathy is extended to Monica and Bart
Wagner and family on the death of
Monica's three month old niece, Elle
Runnion, daughter of Eula and Brian
Runion of Hays. The baby's mother, Eula,
is Monica's sister.
There is good news, too. Gary Hainke was

visit family and friends in this area.
Local relatives are June's sisters,

Gladys; and brothers-in-law, Milton
Meyer and Frederick Haas. June also got
to visit several of her cousins and
other relatives in the area. Her niece,
Kerri and Devon Kuhlman, Austin and
Felicia drove up from Wichita for a
visit. A potluck meal was held at the
Srader center Tuesday evening. Allen and
Gladys had their two grandchildren,

Raini and Owen who moved to Kensington
from Great Bend recently.

planes, a B-24, a B-17, and a fighter
planem had been flown in for public
viewing and inspection. Martin enjoyed
trading stories and visiting with other
veterans and was pleased to see the
former Lutheran pastor in Kensington,
Frank Pekarek. Florence and the
grandchildren had no concept of what the
inside of the
bombers had looked like and discovered
that there were no creature comforts.
