City-wide Garage Sale is June 13

Whoops! the date for the Kensington City-Wide Garage Sale was incorrect in the paper last week. It will be Saturday, June 13. It's not too late to get your location on the map by calling Ruth Levin at 476-2685 immediately.

67 attend Community Bible School

The Kensington Community Vacation Bible School was held Tuesday, May 26, thru Friday, May 29, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. The closing program was held Friday at 11 a.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church . The program again concluded with a bubble and balloon release. It was a beautiful still morning and all of the balloons ascended to amazing heights before being carried to the east as far as the eyes could see.

There were 67 children in attendance. The offerings came to a total of $472.02. This year's offerings were given to Feed the Children out of Oklahoma City .

The children from the United Church of Kensington and First St. John Lutheran Church were transported to the St. John Lutheran Church for the program by the Kensington Fire Department with Pastor Dave Hutson and Curtis Beach driving the two trucks. This is always a fun highlight for these children, and the Fire Department is sincerely thanked for making this possible. .

Children ages 3 thru Kindergarten totaled 24 and attended at First St. John Lutheran Church . Tamra Portenier and Jeni Wallgren were the directors. Preschoolers were taught by Madeline Reneberg, Larissa Dettmer, Michaela Bienhoff, and Ashley Struckhoff. Tamra Portenier, Jackie Reneberg and Shelby Gordon taught the pre-kindergarten class. Liz Hagman and Ryanne Rahjes were the teachers for the Kindergarteners. Alice Rietzke, Elsie Fiene and Ada Gaines prepared the snacks.

The 21 first thru third graders attended at the United Church of Kensington. Emily Blank was the director and Sharon Bearley was the teacher. Lana Ratliff, Denise Miller and Caitlin Boden were in charge of the crafts, and Dianna Rice, Stacy Cole, and Claire Cole were helpers.

Robin Billings was director of the 22 children of grades 4 thru 6 that attended at St. John Lutheran Church . Teachers were Robin Billings, Melanie Molzahn, Linda Rahjes, Aleah Seemann, and Trent Ferguson. Megan Hudson was in charge of the crafts. Kristi Reneberg directed the chime choir. Cindy Rahjes helped with snacks in the kitchen.

Kensington Landmark Torn Down

The large wooden grain elevator west of the concrete elevator was torn down last week. It is reported that the smaller wooden elevator, further west , will also be torn down in the near future.

It would be interesting to know how many bushels of grain were hauled into these elevators during the time they were used. For old-timers, this was a place to be remembered for getting the harvest ready to be sent out on the train cars. Times do change, but memories linger.

Emily Blank had emergency laproscopic gall bladder surgery at the hospital in Beloit Friday. She was able to return home later that day.

We're happy to report that Margaret Stockton is steadily gaining strength and feeling better each day. She continues to go to Hays for dialysis three days a week.

Mary Beach reports that her brother, Bob Beckman of California , spent 9 days in the hospital for intravenous treatment of a viral infection and has been home for about 2 weeks still receiving treatment. He is feeling much better.

Mary Hagedorn of Tucson , Arix., is spending several weeks with her parents, Dean and Darlene Miller and other relatives in the area.

Darah Portenier and Melba Hagman went to Greensburg to see Melba's cousin's new home for their third annual after school trip. The first trip was to Ellis County and last year they went to Abilene . Since cousin Ron works for Greensburg city, they got to tour the new city building under construction. The 50,000 bricks from the city power plant that was destroyed by the tornado will become a part of this building. They visited the "incubator" where people can rent spaces for their stores and businesses until theirs are built. Darah purchased a necklace there. They went to the Hand Dug Well and took pictures. Darah played on the playground equipment constructed by the CBS Morning Crew.

Melba and Darah drove by the new John Deere facility east of town on their way to the Meteorite Museum and had an interesting tour. They had just uncovered another meteorite and it had been cleaned up and was already in the museum. They returned to the Greensburg town area for more picture taking and went through the Art Building built by K.U. students where Richardson 's Flint Hill Photography was being shown. They also went to see the Fair Ground Building provided by New Yorkers.

They left for Ashland to have dinner with Melba's cousins at Hardesty House, stayed in the Wallingford Inn Bed and Breakfast and decorated graves at the cemetery that evening. They had breakfast with five aerobatic pilots who were in Ashland practicing for summer competitions. A stop at the Asland Airport to watch them perform, to take more pictues, and to ask questions provided Darah with a chance to sit in one of the planes for a picture.

Heavy rains fell in the area west and south of Kensington with amounts varying from 2 to over 4 inches. Kensington city reported a total of .60 with lesser amounts towards the Athol area. The wheat in the areas where the rains did not fall is showing drought stress. Thunderstorms are predicted for later today (Monday) with the possibility of high winds, hail and possible tornadoes. We wish for the rain, but hope the bad storms do not happen.
