Weather Cooperates for Veterans' Day in Kensington

The weather defied the forecasters and Saturday, Nov. 14, dawned with sunshine and mild temperatures (and no Kansas wind) making a perfect day for the annual Veterans' Day Parade and Barbecue in Kensington. The crowd gathered early on Main Street. The reviewing stand was in place with Galen Larson manning the sound system and Tad Felts of KKAN/KQMA on deck to broadcast the parade for those unable to attend. Alan Bates and Ken Ellenberger were taking registrations and arranging the parade on north Main Street.

David Stephens, commander of the Sons oif the American Legion, welcomed those assembled at approximately 11 a.m. The National Anthem was beautifully rendered by six Thunder Ridge freshmen and sophomore girls, Jackie Reneberg, Ashley Schmid, Larissa Dettmer, Brittany Kirchhoff, Casie Winchell and Madeline Reneberg while the flag was being raised. Standing at attention were the Color Guards of the Kensington American Legion Post #166, Mt. Surabachi Marine Corps League, Agra American Legion Post #357. Kensington Sons of the American Legion and the Kensington Legion Auxiliary. Becky Saddler, pastor of the United Church of Kensington, gave the invocation. Commander Stephens then introduced the guest speaker, National Guard Warranty Officer Mark Baxa, who gave the challenge to take the time to ask our veterans to tell of their experiences, hear their stories without interruption. and then thank them for their service. (See related speech printed elsewhere in its entirety in this issue.)

The Color Guards were called to attention, the twenty-one gun salute was fired, and taps were beautifully played by trumpeteers, Kenzi Reimer, Nolan and Robin Billings, and Trenton and Deb Ferguson. They were then dismissed and the parade was ready to begin.

Bob Westbrook served as Master of Ceremonies in announcing over 50 parade entries. Deb Wagenblast, Lori Schultz, and Mary (Arment) Taylor served as judges.
The Thunder Ridge Jr. and Sr. High School Band directed by Kristi Reneberg ushered the entries with their spirited music. The Sixth Grade Band also made their marching debut. The entries included interesting floats, vintage cars, antique tractors, special interest presentations, humor, etc., making an exciting variety for the viewers.

Winners of the entries in various categories, listed as first, second and third, were as follows: School---Sophomores, Freshmen, Seniors; Church--First St. John Lutheran Pre-School (only entry); Business--Cencon of Kansas, LLC; Farmers National Bank, Pro Ag Marketing; Organizations--Busy Bees 4-H, American Legion Auxiliary, Kensington Senior Center; Miscellaneous--Dan and Trina Hrabe, Gary Arment, Jan Davis.

The crowd then assembled at the school grounds for the lunch of barbecued sandwiches and beans. The food was done to perfection and served with the traditional efficiency/ It is estimated that the crowd numbered about as usual although the lines were never long perhaps because of the beautiful day which gave people comfortable time to linger and visit. Also, the fall harvest was still in progress. Earlier in the morning, the Lions Club and KAYS had taken food to the homebound and Prairie Haven so they, too, could enjoy the delicious and traditional feast. Food was also delivered to the Senior/Community Center for those that were unable to stand in line and chose to eat there. The Legion Auxiliary had brisk sales at their pie stand.

The Thunder Ridge High School play, "Stepford Students", was presented at the Agra Middle School in late afternoon for additional entertainment. It is reported that it was very funny and well done. Emily Blank was the director.

The free dance at the Legion Hall in the evening with music by the Three Jacks was also well attended. Names were drawn for the prizes that were given away at 11:30 p.m. Legion Auxiliary raffle winners of the handmade quilt was Melinda Mazzarella of Colorado Springs, the quilted patriotic wall hanging was Vivian McDowell of Kensington, and the ceramic Uncle Sam was Denise (Rice) Werner of Mitchell, S.D. Sam Rice of Athol will be able to enjoy hunting with his new shotgun given away by the Sons of the American Legion.

What is there to say about the 2009 Kensington's Veterans' Day Celebration except that it was a perfect day? Again, your correspondent would like to speak for everyone that attended and thank everyone who helped to make it possible. It takes a community to make it happen. But, let us never forget the purpose of Veterans' Day is to give honor and homage to all the veterans as well as our current servicemen and women who have served and been willing to sacrifice their lives to preserve the freedoms of our dear United States of America. Don't forget to thank them when you see them. Our service personnel that are deployed would greatly appreciate mail from home and our prayers. Remember those especially far from home during the holidays coming up. We dare not forget them. God bless America!

The local Red Hatters drove to Kearney, Neb., Sunday, Nov. 8, to meet former member, Judy Graf of Bassett, Neb., for dinner and lots of catch up visiting.

Several members of Lois Hrabe's family spent the past week enjoying the hunting season, especially since many were able to fill their quota of bow hunting deer along with hunting pheasants and water fowl. Everyone enjoyed attending the Middle School basketball game and Veterans' Day festivities. Kensington's maintenance man Lee Johnson took advantage of the beautiful warm days last week to put up the Christmas wreaths on Main Street. The street was also swept in preparation for the Veterans' Day parade on Saturday.

No one, except perhaps some of the children, was disappointed that the heavy snow predicted for Sunday night and Monday failed to materialize. The amount in the rain gauge measured about .20 before the sun broke through Monday afternoon. Most of the soybeans have been cut and the milo harvest is nearing completion, but farmers say the corn is still carrying a lot of moisture. Temperatures in the 50's with little or no rain or snow are forecasted to return giving the farmers time to, hopefully, get the fall harvest completed so everyone can enjoy a nice Thanksgiving with their families. Be sure to drive by the huge milo piles south of the swimming pool and Highway 36. The different varieties make picturesque mounds. Have a happy Thanksgiving remembering that all this bounty is a gift from God!!
