Quilt Show and Home Tour to Usher in
Christmas Season
Christmas festivities in the Kensington
area begin with the HOME Charitable
Foundation's Quilt Show and Home Tour on
Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6. The Home Tour
is self-directed with the first stop
being at the Wellness Center, 103 W. HWY
36, where holiday themed quilts will be
on display.
More than 50 quilted items from bed size
quilts to tree ornaments will be
featured. Designs range from simple to
sublime. Quilt artists will find ideas
for future projects plus some quickie
ideas that could be finished by December
25 this year.
Included in the exhibit are the
practical: potholders, hot dish holders,
towels and flannel throws for cold
winter evenings, decor items like table
toppers, wall hangings, stockings and
tree skirts and everything in between.
Quilting techniques include, but are not
limited to, paper piecing, stained
glass, and ragtime. Creativity is key
with quilters as proven by the wall
hanging designed by Sue Brandyberry of
Wichita. Her inspiration was from a fat
quarter challenge at a quilter's
retreat. Quilts can stir memories of
simple times with retro fabrics and
designs or may add elegance to the homes
they grace.
The quilt display and home tour is a
come and go event from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Home tour maps will be given when $5
admission is paid at the Wellness
Center. In addition to the Home Tour and
Quilt Show, Christmas goodies will be
served at the rural home of Doc and
Beverly Grauerholz.
This fundraiser is held to further the
work of the HOME Charitable Foundation.
The Foundation was created in 1997 to
enhance the Kensington Community. It
presently operates the HOME Community
Wellness Center. Funds are being raised
to cover revenue short falls that
sometime occur at the Center and to
build an endowment fund. Long term goals
of the HOME Foundation include bringing
assisted living housing to Kensington.
Details of the homes on the tour will be
printed in the next issue of this
publication.

Carol Rose Speaks to Middle Cedar Group
Seven members of the Middle Cedar Unit
met at the home of Ada Gaines Tuesday
afternoon, Nov. 17. Carol Rose was the
guest speaker and told of her
experiences as a worker in RV'ers in
Mission, a Kansas group of volunteers
under the Methodist Church group,
"Volunteers in Mission." Carol and her
husband, Russell, became involved with
the group in 2001 when they went to
McAllen, Tex., to help build church pews
for churches in Mexico.
Since that time Carol and Russell have
had many experiences in South Carolina,
Arizona, Colorado, Washington,
Mississippi, and Kansas. They were there
following the tornadoes in Hoisington
and Greensburg and went to Mississippi
following Hurricane Katrina. She shared
stories and displayed scrapbooks with
pictures of the many different projects
they were involved in. They plan to
return to South Carolina this year to
work on a three-week project.
A short business meeting followed and
Ada served a delicious dessert with
coffee. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon
program, lunch, and the fellowship.
