Ryanne Rahjes and Cade Rietzke Crowned Thunder Ridge Royalty

It was a chilly, damp evening at the Longhorn football field last Friday evening when Ryanne Rahjes, daughter of Doug and Wanda Rahjes, and Cade Rietzke, son of Vincent and Kim Rietzke, were crowned queen and king of Thunder Ridge High School. Attendants were Emi Fuentes and Jesse Gibson and Deveony Coomes and Trent Ferguson. Crown bearers were TyLynn Blank, daughter of Tyler and Emily Blank, and Paul Ferguson, son of Steve and Nancy Ferguson.

The theme for the evening was "If Today Was Your Last Day." The Junior Class along with their sponsors, Linda Warner and Kathi Boden, were in charge of the crowning ceremonies which were held before the football game.

A large crowd was in attendance for the homecoming ceremonies followed by the the football game with the Brewster Titans. It was a great achievement for the Longhorns when they defeated the Brewster Titans by a score of 58 to 13 in a game that was called at halftime because of the point rule. (See the sports page for details of the game.) The enthusiasm of the game was enhanced with the music provided by the Thunder Ridge Band directed by Kristi Reneberg, the pep club and the spirit squad.

The Longhorns will travel to Hill City next Friday night for their next game.

Something New Planned by HOME Foundation for Halloween

The HOME Foundation at Kensington is going to host a SPOOK-TACULAR Soup Supper on October 31 Festivities begin at with registration at 3 p.m. for the Poker Run. There will be a short walk of one-half mile or a two-mile route. Prizes will be given for the fastest time, oldest and youngest participants, and best costumes. Entrants will pay a $15 entry fee which includes a soup meal at the end of the walk. A cash prize will be given for the best poker hand.

Free soup for the walkers/runners and to the general public by donation will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Thunder Ridge High School Home Ec Room. On the menus will be chili or potato soup and pumpkin desserts. There will be hayrack rides, costume contests, and trick or treat bags for children attending.

"Trunk or Treating" will be held on the school grounds. Persons interested may park their cars in the designated area and Trunk or Treaters may pick up treats from the trunks of cars. This will allow all children to get into the spirit and view all the goblins and ghosties with one stop instead of walking all over town. The High School KAY Club will be asked to assist with this part of the evening's festivities.

Watch for further announcements on the event or contact Nancy Hagman at the Wellness Center in Kensington at 476-2679 for information..

Sunday School Assembles LWR School Kits

Ninety school kits were assembled by the Sunday School of St. John Lutheran Church for Lutheran World Relief which were taken to the collection site at Hays last Wednesday morning. The School Kits were an exciting project for the children as they learned that in many of the poverty countries of the world children are unable to go to school because they do not have school supplies, sometimes even lacking a pencil to write with. The children brought the items, assembled them, put them in bags made by volunteers of the congregation and then boxed them ready for shipment aided by their teachers, Robin Billings and Joyce Grauerholz. They also drew posters which were posted on the Parish Hall walls asking the congregation to pray for their project.

The Quilting Group from St. John Lutheran Church also made and took 120 quilts to Hays to be taken to the collection site in Minneapolis, Minn., to be sent by Lutheran World Relief to areas badly needing them.

A New Home for Ted's Pickup

Every morning and often during the day the 1983 GMC diesel pickup driven by the late Ted Levin would make its slow trek around Kensington heading to the Country Corner, Legion Hall, or a checkup on Ted's rental houses. The diesel sound became very familiar to neighbors and friends and the silence was noticed when it was parked in the backyard of Ted's home when he passed away.

Ted and his wife Ruth often wintered in Arizona with their nephews and families and were very interested in the 4-H beef project of his great-nephew Zach of Tucson. Zach bought the pickup after Ted's death planning to use it for hauling his two 4-H steers to livestock shows. He is now 15 years old and will soon be eligible for his drivers license. Previously his mother Laura's car had been used to pull the livestock trailor. The problem then was how to get the pickup to Tucson.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, Zach's grandfather Alan Levin and John Levin were at the Nascar races in Kansas City and came to Kensington to drive the pickup back to Tucson leaving Monday. They rented a U-haul to transport other items they had purchased on the Estate sale last month and fastened Ted's flat-bottomed fishing boat to the side hooked behind the pickup. Spectators watching them leave town said they resembled the Beverly Hillbillies moving to California and were apprehensive about the journey; however, Alan and John report that they drove straight through to Tucson making the trip in 21 hours without any problems. The first 100 miles the pickup was a bit sluggish, they report, but then ran steadily at 60 mph. The new owner Zach was thrilled to have his own pickup which will be very special to him as it was to his great-uncle Ted for so many years.

Margaret Stockton has been hospitalized the past week in Wichita for surgery and treatment. It is hoped that new medication will be beneficial and further surgery will not be necessary. She hopes to come home on Tuesday.

Pat Bienhoff has been at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb., for observation, tests, and treatment.

Eulonda Hagman accompanied her granddaughter, Jessie Mayer and son Caden of Hays, to California for a two day trip to Disneyland. They also rented a car
and drove the 101 highway north to Santa Maria and spent the weekend with Eulonda's friend, Wauneta (McCue) Jensma and her family. Eulonda also visited her cousin Candace and Mike Delgado at Lompoc, CA. Candace is the granddaughter of the late Carrie (Dettmer) Klein. They flew back to Denver on Monday and spent time north of Denver on the Anderson's Farms Pumpkin Patch. The manager of the farm is an old college friend of Jessie's, originally from Wakeney. They drove home Wednesday to enjoy the Kansas sunsets. Eulonda states, "You haven't seen Disneyland until you have seen it through the eyes of a 5-year-old (her great-grandson, Cayden)."

KimbraLee Adams continues to excel in Cross County events. She is a Thunder Ridge student running with the Smith Center team. Please check the sports page for her achievements.

Two sisters, Nicole (Hainke) Knipp of Stockton and Leslie Hainke of Osborne, took first and second place in the women's fun-run race at the Old Settlers' Day at Kirwin on Oct. 3. They are the daughters of Gary and the late Grace Hainke.

Bob and Donna Westbrook, Darrel, Elaine, and Justin Bretton, and B.J. and Melissa Westbrook and girls were among those that attended the wedding of Luke Norden and Amy McIntyre at Rapid City, S.D., Saturday evening. Luke is the son of Ed and Janice Norden of Canon City, Colo.

It was amazing the number of people that were out for the Kensington City-wide Garage Sale last Saturday beginning early in the morning when streets were even a bit icy. Good sales are reported by those having sales.

Last week began with a general rain of about one inch and the remainder of the week can only be described as "yucky." It has been cloudy, misty, and rainy with even a few snow flurries over the weekend. A killing frost early Saturday morning when temps dropped into the mid 20's brought the growth of flowers and vegetable gardens to a halt and put the end to milo and corn maturation. The tree leaves that had just begun to change to fall colors are quickly dropping to the ground. Several more days of chilly, damp days with the possibility of rain are forecasted before nicer weather is to set in later in the week. Hopefully, with some sunshine. things will dry off so fall work can continue.
