Band to KSU Band Day
The twenty-seven members of the Thunder
Ridge Band attended Band Day at Kansas
State University in Manhattan on
Saturday, Sept. 26. There were 25 bands
from across Kansas participating, but
the Thunder Ridge Band was the only one
from this area.
The students did a great job marching in
the long parade and enjoyed
participating in the halftime show with
other bands by being the post of the "K"
in the KSU formation. Most of the music
was patriotic helping celebrate Fort
Riley Day.
The band members report a great
experience and a fun time. They were
accompanied by their director, Kristi
Reneberg, two teachers, and four
sponsors with George Powell driving the
coach.

Around
the Community
Leonard Beckmann had surgery for a
fractured hip early last week at the
hospital in Kearney, NE. If his progress
continues as expected, he will be
returned to Prairie Haven for further
rehabilitation the forepart of this
week.
Al Lambert recently returned from an
enjoyable trip with his brothers. Al
drove to Brighton, Colo., where he met
his brother Robert, and together they
drove on to Grand Junction, Colo., where
they were joined by another brother,
Vernon. The three then journeyed to the
South Rim of the Grand Canyon and then
around to the North Rim of the Grand
Canyon. They saw the Petrified Forest
and the Black Forest. They especially
were interested in the crater produced
when a meteorite crashed to earth in
Arizona leaving a hole big enough for
two football fields scattering exploded
rocks everywhere. The rim of the hole is
two miles long and 700 feet deep. Al
will be happy to tell you about his
trip.
Al Lambert also visited Wilma Starks at
her assisted living apartment in Ft.
Collins, Colo. They were joined for
dinner by Wilma's daughter and husband,
Kay and Gary Merrifield, and Robert
Lambert and friend Isabelle. Al states
that Wilma has a nice place and is doing
fairly well.
Robin and Kendra Billings were joined by
two of Robin's sisters from Nebraska,
and they drove to Saint Michael, Minn.,
to attend the Confirmation of their
nephew and cousin, David Anderson, on
Sunday, Sept. 27.
Denis and Wilma Sweat are proud to
announce a new grandson. Isaac Paul was
born to Quentin and Maria Stoll at 9:51
p.m. on October 2, 2009. He weighed 4
lbs. and ½ oz. and was 17 inches long.
Maria was diagnosed with preeclampsia
and the doctors had been watching her
closely. They decided that both mother
and baby would be safer if they
performed a C-section. Both mother and
baby seem to be doing fine.
As this column is written Monday, light
rain is falling halting the wheat
drilling and soybean harvesting still in
progress. . Moisture is welcome as the
two days of strong wind last week really
took the moisture from the soil. The
forecast is for nice weather to return
mid-week before a cold front moves in
over the weekend with the possibility of
freezing temperatures. Some of the more
tender plants got nipped last week.
Moisture will also return to the
forecast which would certainly be
welcome.
The ferocious winds last Thursday and
Friday with blowing dust brought horrors
when the fire siren sounded last Friday
afternoon. Pastor Dave Hutson had
noticed smoke in the soybean/corn/milo
fields belonging to Tom Bose west of
Cedar and called the fire department.
The quick response of the Kensington,
Athol, and Gaylord fire departments and
their hard work kept the damage minimal
in spite of the high winds. A second
call was made when the fire rekindled,
but it, too, was quickly put out. The
Bose family is very appreciative of the
quick responses of the fire departments
and thanks Pastor Dave for reporting it.
It is believed the fire started from a
combine.
