"Spook-tacular" planned for Wellness Center

The HOME Foundation Board met September 21. Improving community awareness of the Home Community Wellness Center and fund-raising were items on the agenda. Treasurer Dixie Reidel gave the treasurer's report. Manager Nancy Hagman reported on the grant application to Midwest Energy.

"Spook-tacular" was planned for October 31. A poker walk/run will kick-off the afternoon's festivities. Participants will register and pick up their first card at the Wellness Center from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. A short and long route will be set up. The entry fee includes free admission to the soup supper at the end of the route. Prizes will be given for the best hands and fastest times.

Soup for the general public by donation and the walkers/runners will be served from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m at the Thunder Ridge Elementary School Cafeteria. Trick or treat sacks will be provided for children. Additional fun activities are developing. Watch for further details.

A Holiday HOME tour and Christmas Quilt exhibition is in the works for December 6. Maps and descriptions of the homes on the tour will be available at the Spook-tacular event. Board members also spent time brainstorming ideas for cooperation with other groups promoting wellness and fitness in the community.

Westbrooks Have Family Reunion

B.J., Melissa, Morgan and Maycee Westbrook hosted the Westbrook family reunion the past weekend. This time was selected because it would have been the 100th birthday of the late Essie Westbrook on Sept. 27. The activities on Saturday morning were a tour of the Kirwin City Hall and the Kirwin schoolhouse where Betty (Westbrook) Brown, and Jerry, Dick and Arlene, and Bob Westbrook attended school.

A picnic lunch was enjoyed on the south side of the Kirwin Lake at Crappie Point. Other activities at the Westbrook farm were volleyball, horseshoe pitching, a scavenger hunt organized by Melissa, and a hayrack ride. A catered dinner prepared by Marla Baumann was served in the evening followed by a slide show. A family church service was held at the farm Sunday morning followed by brunch.

Those enjoying the weekend were Jerry and Nancy Westbrook and Michael, JoDee, Luke, Allison and Molly Westbrook, all of Loveland, Colo.; David, Janelle and McKenzie Grau of Colorado Springs; Verlyn and Kaye Perkins of Lakewood, Colo.; Dick and Arlene Westbrook of Salina; Marcia Westbrook of Manhattan; Rick and Vickie Robison and Garrett of Norton; Betty Brown, Roger Jackson, Rodney and Melanie Jackson, and Steve Cotton of Phillipsburg; Courtney Badger of Kirwin; and Bob and Donna Westbrook and the host family of Kensington. Darrell and Elaine Bretton and Gary Hainke and Liz Nicholas were guests Sunday morning.

Trenton Palmer arrived last Tuesday to spend time with his parents, Nick and Anita Palmer, and family. He has transferred from the Florida National Guard into the Kansas National Guard and is awaiting reassignment at this time. He completed a 3-year assignment in the U.S. Navy and recently completed six months training in aviation electronics.

Gilbert Kuhlmann has returned from a 3-weeks vacation that took him over 3,000 miles of travel into many states. He accompanied his daughter and husband, JoLinn and Fred Rogers of Minneola, to Battle Creek, Mich., where they met his other daughter, Sandra Rogers. They travelled the eastern maritime seaboard until they reached Bushnell, Florida, where they spent time with their son and brother, Dick and Margaret Kuhlmann. They enjoyed visiting, sight-seeing and fishing. They then returned to Michigan through Kentucky and Tennessee to enjoy different scenery. Gilbert says they had a wonderful trip and were in the heavy rain at Atlanta, Georgia. Gilbert is glad to be home and will be happy to tell you about their trip.

The Thunder Ridge Middle School eighth graders and the High School freshman physical science class attended the Safari Expo for grades 8 through 12 at the Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Patricia Walters, math and science teacher, sponsored the group, and George Powell drove the activity bus.

It's a busy time for the farmers. Wheat seeding is progressing, silos are being filled and the soybean harvest is coming along. It was a warm, windy Sunday, but temps dropped to 38 degrees early Monday morning before a good warm-up came later on Monday. No frost is predicted at this time, but frequent temperature changes are reminders to keep a jacket handy. .

Planning a garage sale this fall? Be sure to call Ruth Levin immediately to get your location on the map for the Kensington City-wide sale on Saturday, Oct. 9.
