H1N1 Flu Clinic Thursday at Kensington
A reminder to Kensington residents that
the Smith County Health Department will
be giving H1N1 flu shots at the
Kensington Senior/Community Center
Thursday, Feb. 4 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The shots are free for all ages, but you
are asked to bring your insurance and
Medicare cards.

Senior Parent Night at BB Game Friday
The Kay Club in sponsoring the Senior
Parent Night at the Thunder Ridge High
School basketball games with Northern
Valley Friday, Feb. 5. The
acknowledgement of the parents of the
senior players will be held at 5:30 p.m.
The Junior Class will have a soup supper
during the games with Northern Valley.
Serving will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Soup varieties will be chili, potato,
and chicken noodle.

Mini Cheer Camp Planned for Saturday
The Thunder Ridge High School
Cheerleaders are hosting a mini-cheer
camp on Saturday, February 6, 2010 from
2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the high
school gym. Girls, grades pre-K through
6th, are invited to attend. The cost is
$15 and includes a t-shirt.
The mini-cheerleaders will perform on
Friday, February 19 at half-time of the
boys varsity game. To register contact

Sr. Center to Have Souper Bowl Dinner
Sunday Noon
Come to the Kensington Senior/Community
Center Sunday noon, Feb. 7, to enjoy a "souper"
dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m. Donations
will be taken at the door. Vegetable
beef and chili soups and ham & beans
along with relishes and salads will be
on the menu. Come and enjoy the meal and
fellowship. This is not just for
Seniors, but persons of all ages are
invited.

Super Bowl Party at Legion Hall
There will be a Super Bowl party at the
Kensington Legion Hall Sunday, Feb. 7,
beginning at 5 p.m. Refreshments and
snacks will be available. Make your
reservations now for the Valentine's
Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the
Legion by calling Karen Pollock at

Tuesday, Feb. 23, 7 to 10 p.m.
Come play pool at 9 a.m. each day. Get
four people together and play cards in

HOME Charitable Foundation has Meeting
The HOME Charitable foundation held the
annual meeting and open house on Sunday,
Jan. 24 at the Wellness Center with
thirteen persons in attendance.
Refreshments were served and the fun
raisers and business for 2009 were
reviewed along with any new business.
The members present received a one-week
extension of their membership. Four
members took advantage of this saving.
Door prizes were given. Luetta Beckmann
and Evelyn Levin were the recipients of
three months free membership.

Births
Max and Patty Kuhlmann of Kensington
have two new grandsons. A son, Cash
William, was born January 25 to Nathen
and Kendra Kuhlmann of Saint Peters,
Missouri. Cash weighed seven pounds 13
ounces and is 21.5 inches long. A week
earlier, on January 18, Asher Arthur,
was born to April and Jon Kohrs of
Overland Park. Asher was welcomed by a
sister Irey, Max mad Patty's
17-month-old granddaughter. Dorine
Kuhlmann of Kensington is their
great-grandmother.

Around
the Community
The good news is that Dixie Hesterman
planned to return to teaching the second
grade at Thunder Ridge Elementary School
this (Monday) morning after spine
surgery about three months ago. Tara
Seemann has been filling in during her
absence. Both Mrs. Hesterman and the
students are excited for her return.
Joyce Grauerholz shattered her elbow in
a fall last Thursday and was taken to
Salina for surgery on Friday. Their son,
Dr. Byron Grauerholz, is a member of the
Orthopaedic Sports Health Clinic of
Salina where the surgery was performed.

Cory Struckhoff was injured in a
4-wheeler accident over the weekend. He
sustained a broken collar bone and a
cracked rib plus lots of bumps and
bruises. He and Mary were at the farm
rounding up cattle when the accident
occurred.
Cathy Diercks was air-lifted to the
Creighton University Medical Center as
stated in the column last week. Her
condition was stabilized, medication
adjusted, and, if she continues to
improve as hoped, plans are to transfer
her back to Hays Regional Medical Center
to continue her therapy.
The family of Gilbert Meyer states that
he hopes to be dismissed to his home
from the Smith County Hospital this
(Monday) morning.
Myrnah Ratliff had carpal tunnel surgery
as an outpatient at Phillipsburg
Hospital on her birthday, Jan. 27. It
was not a good way to celebrate.
The third grade class and their teacher,
Mrs. Annalee Ratliff, were excited to
join the students that attended the
Kansas Day festivities in Logan Friday.
They report a good time.
A large crowd attended the Sunday
pancake feed served by the Sons of the
American Legion at the Legion Hall
Sunday noon. The pancakes, sausages,
eggs, and sauerkraut were delicious and
there was lots of fellowship and
visiting.
Edna Panter, formerly of Athol and now
living at Long Term Care in Smith
Center, had a wonderful open house
celebration of her 100th birthday at the
Srader Center in Smith Center Sunday
afternoon. Many relatives and friends
stopped to visit. Her actual birthday is
Feb. 1.
Congratulations to Michelle Palmer for
being the first place speller in the
sixth grade at Smith Center Elementary
School. She is the daughter of Nick and
Anita Palmer and granddaughter of
Mildred Dettmer.
It was a typical winter week with no
measurable moisture. Fog and a covering
of light snow greeted residents Monday
morning. Tuesday is Groundhog Day, and
the forecasters are confident he will
see his shadow in Kansas so it will mean
six more weeks of winter.

Prairie
Haven Notes
Manicures were given Monday morning by
Wanda. Residents were asked to describe
their name and reciting snow words kept
the conversation lively in the
afternoon. Current events were presented
Tuesday morning and bingo was played in
the afternoon. Current events were
discussed again on Wednesday and famous
smiles and looking at the year were
afternoon topics.
The beauty shop is now open on Thursday.
First St. John Lutheran Church had the
Thursday morning Bible study. Visiting
followed. The Residents' Council met in
the afternoon. National and local news
was discussed Friday morning and bingo
was played in the afternoon. The usual
card games, watching movies and
television, and working on puzzles were
Saturday's activities.
The United Church had the Sunday
afternoon worship service. Exercises and
one sessions are held daily.
