Around
the Community
Cathy Diercks is making slow progress
with therapy at the Creighton University
Medical Center in Omaha. It is hoped she
can be moved from ICU into a private
room. Future plans include a move to
Hays Regional Medical Center for therapy
when her condition improves
sufficiently.
Pat Clarke spend Christmas at her home
here in Kensington with her friends and
neighbors. She returned to Cheyenne,
Wyo., last Wednesday.
Rick Baumann was surprised while
watching the 10 p.m. news on Channel 12
KWCH-TV Wednesday evening to see that he
was the winner of the weather umbrella
Christmas Day visitors at the home of
Ada Gaines were her granddaughter and
husband, Staci and Ricky Kearn, their
children, Spencer, Tyler and Lyndzie,
along with their foster children, Erica,
Erin, Eric, and Cory. They had lunch
with Ada and enjoyed playing cards with
her. Steve and JoAnn Rice and Brian,
Linda and Larissa Dettmer also stopped
by. After the gathering at Grandma
Gaines, the family went to Steve and
JoAnn Rice's home for their family
Christmas. J.R. and Angel Rice, Kristal
and Gracie were also present. They had
supper together before Staci and her
family had to return home to Concordia
for family gatherings on her husband's
side.
Ky and Katie Beach and Lilly of Topeka
spent Christmas with Curtis and Mary
Beach and Bruce and Amber Hardacre,
Elizabeth and Abby.
Jason and Jennifer Rice, Jackson, Avery,
and Jamison of Olathe spent Christmas
with Jason's parents, Sam and Linda Rice

and Larissa and Lyle and Virgie Ratliff,
and other relatives and friends.

Laura Bienhoff is scheduled for her
return flight from Kearney, Neb.,
Tuesday evening for her return to
London, England, after spending two
weeks with her parents and sister, Paul,
Deb and Leah Bienhoff. The biggest
disappointment was not being able to get
together with her sister, Jennifer Bruns
of Marshall, Minn., because of the heavy
snow and extremely cold weather there.
Laura is employed by Exxon/Mobil as a

at the Smith County Hospital.
Mealsite director Armi McPherson spent
the holidays with her family in Omaha.
She states that she has seen enough snow
to last her all year. (Doesn't sound
like it is over yet, Armi.) Even so, she
reports a nice Christmas and New Years
with her friends and family. She reports
winners at pinochle on December 28 at
the Senior Center were Howard Grauerholz
and Ada Gaines, high, and Al Lambert and
Elvyn Slavik sharing the low scores.
Kendra and Nolan Billings tell of the
fun they had at the Anderson Family
Christmas at a motel in Kearney, Neb.,
along with their parents, Greg and Robin
Billings.
Pastor Dave and Susie Hutson were in
Chanute for a belated Christmas with his
children, Lucas and Rachel Hutson, and
his mother, Fran Pearman. Lay persons
from the congregation had the Sunday
morning worship at First St. John
Lutheran Church during his absence.
Some thoughts to ponder during these
cold, wintry days:
Frame every so-called disaster with
these words, "In five years, will this
matter?"
Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's
still a gift.
No matter how you feel, get up, dress
up, and show up.
God is in control, make peace with HIM.
Lots of visitors at Prairie Haven
The beauty shop was open Monday and
manicures were given. Routine exercises
and one-one sessions are held daily.
Discussions in the afternoon were about
" The home I remember." Facts of Alabama
were shared. Current events were
presented Tuesday and bingo was played.
Presidents and vice-presidents and
different cocktails were afternoon
topics.
The United Church had the Thursday
morning Bible study. A new Year's Eve
party was held in the afternoon. There
were no activities on New Year's Day.
The usual puzzle assembly, card games
and television and movie watching were
Saturday activities.

Sunday afternoon worship service.

Richter, and Georgetta Kinyon.

News is Scarce
School vacation is over and students
have returned to their routine. College
students have another week of vacation
before their new semester starts. The
cold weather is the main topic of
conversation and it has kept everyone
fairly close to home. Forecasters
predict even colder temperatures with
blowing snow coming mid-week with below
zero readings and highs only in the
single digits. The deep freeze is on,
but it doesn't compare to the frigid
weather in northern states, so put on
your long johns, button up your coat,
and hunt out the caps and gloves because
you are going to need them.
The Kensington column is short this week
even those in the beauty shop didn't
have anything new to report going on in
the community.
