Deaths of Local Interest
Maria Seemann received word from Perth,
Australia, that George Wiencke, 85, had
passed away. George was the son of Edwin
Wiencke, a Lutheran pastor who had
studied in the United States and Alma
Seemann Wiencke who was born and raised
on a farm east of Kensington. (She was a
sister of the late Ted Seemann, Katie
Feldmann and Alvina Feldmann.) George
Wiencke served as an Air Force pilot out
of England during WWII. He retired as
director of Civil Aviation of Western
Australia and the Northern Territories.
Word was received here of the death of
Pauline Prosser Grauerholz of Cedar
Falls, Iowa, on Friday, July 9, 2010.
She had battled Parkinson's disease for
a number of years. Pauline grew up in
Athol and graduated from Athol Rural
High School with the Class of 1945. She
married a schoolmate, Waldean Grauerholz.
He and their children survive. She was
preceded in death by her sister,
Geraldine Kuhlmann, and brother, Acie
Prosser. The funeral was in Cedar Falls
Tuesday. It is hoped a more complete
obituary will be available.
Relatives in the area received word
Tuesday of the death of Florence (Engelke)
Gerke, age 88, of Burlington, Colo.
Florence was the youngest child of Henry
& Ella (Borgman) Engelke, who lived in
the Athol community in the early 1900's.
Local cousins are Leona Conaway, Mildred
Grauerholz, Robert Levin, Royce Levin
and their families. Funeral services and
burial were held at Burlington, Colo.,
on Saturday, July 10, 2010.

Around
the Community
David Rust was taken to the hospital in
Lincoln, Neb., Saturday evening with
heart stress. A stint was put in Sunday.
They plan to return home today (Monday).
Lyle Kuhlmann, son of Greg and Julie
Kuhlmann, broke both bones above his
ankle when he and a friend collided
while playing at a ball game in Mankato
Friday evening. They consulted with a
specialist in Kearney, Neb., this
(Monday) morning and surgery was
performed. He was dismissed Monday
evening. He will be an eighth grader at
Thunder Ridge Middle School this fall.
Larry Burns of Phillipsburg, , father of
Joe Burns, suffered a stroke last week
and is in the hospital at Holdrege,
Neb., for therapy. He is making a steady
recovery.
My apologies to the survivors of the
family of Ruth Wolf. The daughters
should have read Patricia Mancuso of
Lees Summit, Mo., Beverly Mills of
Bonner Springs, Janeen Landoll of
Marysville, Beth Burns of Kensington,
and Marlene Whitney of Plainville, and a
son, Ron Wolf of Kensington. Marlene and
family had just moved to Plainville
where her husband will be the new
Superintendent of Schools.
Jerry Brien of Ft. Worth, Tex., formerly
of the Athol community called your
correspondent Saturday evening to report
that they had been to the cancer
treatment center in Houston last week.
His two spots on the brain were small
and they hoped to keep them under
control. He states that his condition is
about 50% of normal and he is able to
get out with the help of many friends in
the area. He expressed thanks for all
the cards and well-wishes he received
several months ago and especially the
card from the Athol Fire Department. His
heart is still in Kansas. He appreciates
mail and his address is 117 Yuchi Trl.
N, Ft. Worth, TX 67108 US.
Denis and Wilma Sweat made a trip to
Albany, Ore., over the July 4 weekend to
help their granddaughter, Emma Ruth,
celebrate her first birthday. Her
parents are Teresa and Adrian Kidarsa.
Emma had her party a little early so her
grandparents could watch her open her
gifts. Denis and Wilma drove to Denver
early Friday and spent a few hours with
Paul and Apryl Sweat, and 2 ½ year old
Martin. Paul took his parents to the
airport that afternoon, and came back to
pick them up on their return flight on
Tuesday.
David and Michelle Sweat and 3 year old
Matthew from Minneapolis, KS, were also
visiting Paul, Apryl, and Martin so they
got to see them, too. Matthew and Martin
are really good friends and play well
together. They don’t like being split
up! They all went out for lunch together
before Denis and Wilma and David,
Michelle, and Matthew headed for home.
Wilma is waiting for a call for a new
granddaughter to arrive any day and will
return to Paul’s to help out for a few
days.
Louis and Kristi Seemann, Alex, Ariel
and Ava of Overland Park spent part of
last week with Maria Seemann, the Martin
Seemann family, and friends. Rod and
Ellie Seemann of Fairway visited Maria
Seemann Monday afternoon while checking
up with friends in the area.
Elizabeth Hagman of Smith Center and
Kate Hagman of Hugoton who returned
Friday from a 6-weeks tour of Europe
showed slides and told of their trip at
First St. John Parish Hall Sunday
evening. They report a wonderful trip.
Elzabeth will continue her education for
an MA in music education at the U. of
Oklahoma this fall and is making
preparations for her move.
Several sunny days last week without
additional rainfall should have given
most farmers the opportunity to finish
the wheat harvest. As this is written
Monday afternoon, it is cloudy with the
prediction of a weather front moving
through that could bring showers to the
area. Hot temperatures with highs
possibly reaching the century mark are
forecasted for the remainder of the week
so the air conditioners will get a
workout.
