Benefit for Burns family is Saturday Evening

A Poker Run and Benefit Supper for the family of Joe and Beth Burns Family is planned Saturday, July 24. All three of their sons. Joseph, Nolan, and Logan, have medical conditions which have left them with huge medical bills.

The benefit Poker Run will start at Pooches in Smith Center at 11:00 a.m. and will end in Kensington in time for participants to enjoy the whole hog supper at the Kensington Legion Hall.

The supper will be served Saturday evening, July 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kensington American Legion. Featured will be pulled pork sandwiches with all the trimmings. Prairie Haven and Smith County Care Center (Jim Struckhoff and Angela Kuhlmann, managers) are coordinating/sponsoring the event. If f you are unable to attend, but would like to help out with the benefit, contact Angela Kuhlmann or Jim Struckhoff at Prairie Haven (785-476-2623. Proceeds will be matched by Thrivent.

Benefit for Jo Haun Nixon Sunday Noon

St. John Lutheran Church of Athol is hosting a benefit dinner Sunday noon with serving from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW in Smith Center for Jo Hahn Nixon who received a severely injured shoulder in a car accident several months ago and required extensive reconstructive surgery of her shoulder which has kept her from working. Sadly during this time her husband, Darren, a longtime employee at Peterson/Excel Industry, was laid off because of large cutbacks there, and the couple was left with no health insurance to pay the medical bills.

Jo graduated from Kensington High School in 1994 and is the daughter of Darlene and the late Allen (Hondo) Hahn who worked for Athol Co-op for many years and was the janitor at Kensington schools prior to his terminal cancer illness.

On the benefit dinner menu will be sloppy jo sandwiches and all the fixings. Take the family out for Sunday dinner. Dennis and Kathy Beckmann, 695-2256, are the contact persons. Proceeds will be matched by Thrivent.

Cell Phone Numbers Go Public This Month

All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies this month and you will start to receive sales calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.

To present this, call the following number from your cell phone: 1-888-382-1222. This is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different number. It takes about 20 seconds.

Old Fashioned Saturday Night

It's time to make your plans to attend the annual Old Fashioned Saturday Night in Kensington on August 14. The usual Kiddie/Pet Parade will start off the festivities. Main Street will be lined with all sorts of game vendors and delicious food. The big entertainment will be to catch up on visiting with your friends and neighbors that has been put on the "back burner" during the busy summer months. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display.

See you in Kensington on Saturday, August 14. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the evening.

Around the Community

Julie Grauerholz of Hays, daughter of Darold and Joyce Grauerholz, is scheduled for surgery today, Monday, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita to remove a tumor from her left middle ear. Julie suffers from severe migraine headaches, and her vision and balance are also affected. She hopes to be back taking pictures for her photography career the following week.

Larry Burns of Phillipsburg who had been in the hospital at Holdrege, Neb., was able to return home last week.

Judy Graf of Bassett, Neb., was a Thursday overnight guest of Ruth Bienhoff. She was having an update of their van installed at Matteson's in Phillipsburg and enjoyed catching up on news of their many friends.

The community has the opportunity to help out two very needy families this weekend, the family of Joe and Beth Burns of Kensington and Jo Hahn Nixon of Smith Center who graduated from Kensington High School. Not only do they need our financial help, but also our prayers and emotional support. Read the opening stories at the beginning of this column for all the details.

Wishes for this week--May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.
