Kensington's Veterans' Day Celebration Noted in Sunflower Legionnaire

J.S. Wagner presented a copy of the March, 2010, Sunflower Legionnaire to your correspondent with the notation that parts of the following article might be newsworthy for the Kensington column. The article is entitled "Leavenworth, Kensington, and Emporia Get it Right" by Charles Yunker, a past guest speaker at Kensington's Veterans Day Celebration.

The article begins "Each of these Kansas communities celebrate Veterans Day in the manner befitting its name and each involve their entire community." After going on to describe the parade and celebration at Leavenworth he continues "Leavenworth also boasts it has the oldest Veterans Day Parade west of the Mississippi however the good folks in Kensington, Kansas, might dispute that claim. I'll class it a tie as I sip my afternoon tea in a cup that proclaims "Veterans Honored in Kensington since November 11, 1918" and "Tradition Continues, Parade and Free Bar-b-que."

The article continues "Kensington's parade cannot match Leavenworth's in number of entries or spectators, but like their larger counterpart, its schools are also closed and the entire community turns out for a very spirited parade that attracts a number of entries from throughout north central Kansas. If memory serves me correctly at least some of Kensington's parades and Veterans Day speeches have featured a radio broadcast. I'm not 100 percent certain on that last part, but one thing I am certain of is the food served at the bar-b-que is excellent. If you like good bar-b-que put Kensington's parade on your calendar now! Great people, great food; that's Kensington." (Not only is the speech but the entire parade featured on our local radio station and the entire speech is usually printed in our local papers. Ruth Bienhoff)

The writer, Charles Hunker, goes on to describe the celebration at Emporia and concludes the article "Leavenworth, Kensington, Emporia, and others not mentioned have it right by getting the communities involved. It takes work, but isn't restoring pride and honor worth the effort to educate our youth while reminding everyone (including ourselves) of the sacrifices made by those citizens who have worn the uniform? You can begin now by laying the ground work for a meaningful Memorial Day observance in May followed by regular meetings to organize a celebration in November."

Levin's Attend Wedding in Arizona

Evelyn Levin returned March 1 from a trip to Arizona and Texas to attend special family events and spent time with the various families.

The wedding of her granddaughter, Lindsay Levin, daughter of John and Kimberly Levin, to James Glass, on Feb. 13 was the first family event she attended at Saguaro Buttes, Tucson, Ariz. Family members in the wedding party were Andrea Wiggins, sister of the bride, and Kimberlee Levin, sister-in-law of the bride, and Abby Levin, Rachel Levin, Ella Levin, and Mason Levin, all cousins of the bride. Others known to this area who attended the wedding were Steve and Deb Levin of Kensington, Jeff and Pam Thompson and Jackie of Paola, Dale and Jennifer Kennedy and Jarod of Wamego, Spencer and Amanda Levin, Mason, Kaylee and McKenna of Colorado Springs, Travis and Carmen Levin, Keeten, Bella and Annalise of Allen, Tex., Josh Levin of Waco, Tex., Alan and Carol Erick, Dallas, Tex., and Abby and Rachel Leivn of Dallas, Tex. Otto and Cheryl Levin of Kensington were unable to attend because of the sudden death of Cheryl's mother, Dru Barker of Manhattan.

Evelyn, accompanied by Jan Levin, then flew to Dallas to attend a baby shower for the expected grandchild of Carol and Al Erick. The baby's parents are Casey and Elayna Erick. While there Evelyn was able to meet her new great-granddaughter, Emma Lynn Shelton, daughter of Emily and Eric Shelton of Dallas. Emma claims Jeff and Mickie Levin of Kensington as her grandparents.

A rainy, gloomy week is forecasted for this week. As this column is written Monday, intermittent showers are falling with amounts becoming heavier as the afternoon progresses. Kensington city had .35 rain Friday evening along with lightning and thunder. The rain is great for the wheat, grass, and other vegetation, but makes choring difficult especially for those with newborn livestock.

Quote for the week from TR Weekly Bulletin--"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."--Anne Bradstreet.
