Kensington's Veterans' Day Celebration
Noted in Sunflower Legionnaire
J.S. Wagner presented a copy of the
March, 2010, Sunflower Legionnaire to
your correspondent with the notation
that parts of the following article
might be newsworthy for the Kensington
column. The article is entitled
"Leavenworth, Kensington, and Emporia
Get it Right" by Charles Yunker, a past
guest speaker at Kensington's Veterans
Day Celebration.
The article begins "Each of these Kansas
communities celebrate Veterans Day in
the manner befitting its name and each
involve their entire community." After
going on to describe the parade and
celebration at Leavenworth he continues
"Leavenworth also boasts it has the
oldest Veterans Day Parade west of the
Mississippi however the good folks in
Kensington, Kansas, might dispute that
claim. I'll class it a tie as I sip my
afternoon tea in a cup that proclaims
"Veterans Honored in Kensington since
November 11, 1918" and "Tradition
Continues, Parade and Free Bar-b-que."
The article continues "Kensington's
parade cannot match Leavenworth's in
number of entries or spectators, but
like their larger counterpart, its
schools are also closed and the entire
community turns out for a very spirited
parade that attracts a number of entries
from throughout north central Kansas. If
memory serves me correctly at least some
of Kensington's parades and Veterans Day
speeches have featured a radio
broadcast. I'm not 100 percent certain
on that last part, but one thing I am
certain of is the food served at the
bar-b-que is excellent. If you like good
bar-b-que put Kensington's parade on
your calendar now! Great people, great
food; that's Kensington." (Not only is
the speech but the entire parade
featured on our local radio station and
the entire speech is usually printed in
our local papers. Ruth Bienhoff)
The writer, Charles Hunker, goes on to
describe the celebration at Emporia and
concludes the article "Leavenworth,
Kensington, Emporia, and others not
mentioned have it right by getting the
communities involved. It takes work, but
isn't restoring pride and honor worth
the effort to educate our youth while
reminding everyone (including ourselves)
of the sacrifices made by those citizens
who have worn the uniform? You can begin
now by laying the ground work for a
meaningful Memorial Day observance in
May followed by regular meetings to
organize a celebration in November."

our local volunteer firemen and EMT's.
The response to this event indicates the
appreciation our local folks have for
this valued service to our community.
Thanks, firemen and EMT's from everyone
in the community!!
A rainy, gloomy week is forecasted for
this week. As this column is written
Monday, intermittent showers are falling
with amounts becoming heavier as the
afternoon progresses. Kensington city
had .35 rain Friday evening along with
lightning and thunder. The rain is great
for the wheat, grass, and other
vegetation, but makes choring difficult
especially for those with newborn
livestock.
Quote for the week from TR Weekly
Bulletin--"If we had no winter, the
spring would not be so pleasant; if we
did not sometimes taste of adversity,
prosperity would not be so
welcome."--Anne Bradstreet.
Jerry Fulmer of Athol is back at his
home in Athol. He is getting meals
delivered to him in his home as the meal
deliverer from Phillipsburg travels
through on his way to Smith Center.
Norma Larson is back at home in
Kensington after spending about three
months with her daughters and their
families, Jan and Lea in Illinois and
Karalee in Lawrence.
Tuesday morning--The Bienhoff rain gauge
has almost an inch of rain in it since
Monday morning. More rain and possibly
even some light snow is forecasted for
the rest of the week.
